MIAMI, Fla. ? Hannah Hoch won her second tournament this year with a 3-over-par 74-73-75--222 Tuesday afternoon at the Fourth Annual Miccosukee Women's Championship, while the University of Colorado women's golf fell from first to fifth in the final standings. Hoch has two of the three medal winners in the 11-year program of women's golf.
"She played well," head coach Anne Kelly said of Hoch. "She didn't hit very many greens, but she got up and down like crazy today. She's a great putter and she relied on it when she needed it most."
Hoch had 27 putts on the day; she hit only five greens in regulation, but 1-putted 11 times in the final round to secure her victory. The sophomore's first win came this fall at the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate in Highlands Ranch.
“I thought the tournament went very well,” the sophomore said after her win. “The course was in great shape and I was just able to make a lot of my putts.”
CU fell one stroke shy of fourth place behind Wisconsin, while Georgia State won the tournament with a 914 overall. The Buffaloes' top five placing (306-310-318) is its fourth this year in that group and is the most since the 2002-03 golfers had 5 in its season.
Junior Maria Persson-Gulda dropped seven strokes from Monday for an 82 concluding round and scored 237 overall, yet she was able to finish in a tie for 32nd. Persson-Gulda has finished in the top 35 of all her tournaments this season.
Elsewhere for the Buffs, Jessie Malcolm and Allison Rella shared a five-way tie for 41st with 239. Malcolm lowered her pair of 80s on Monday to a 79 and Rella scored an 82, just as she did in her second round the previous day. Freshman Lindsay Senger completed her sixth tournament this season with an 87 closing round and shot a 252 overall with a tie for 75th.
"It was a good experience," Kelly said of the team effort. "We came in having a chance to win, but didn't have the kind of day we needed to get the victory. You have to get yourself in that position a couple of times to get used to those kinds of situation and pressures. I think we'll be able to learn from it.
“Overall, it wasn't a bad way to start out the spring season. We're looking forward to the rest of the season.”
The Buffaloes next tournament will take place on March 8-9 at the Spartan Invitational in Monterey, Calif..
