FOUR-POINT SWING DOOMS BUFFS AGAINST NO. 16 TEXAS A&M

October 20, 2004 | Volleyball

BOULDER ?
Colorado had game one against Texas A&M and were nearing a 2-0 lead when a four-point swing changed the momentum, and eventually the outcome, as the No. 16 Aggies claimed a 25-30, 30-28, 30-26, 30-21 Big 12 Conference win over the Buffaloes Wednesday night at the Coors Events Conference Center.

CU drops to 10-7 overall and remains in sixth place in the Big 12 at 5-5. Texas A&M keeps pace with
Kansas State and Missouri for third place in the league standings at 7-3 and is 11-5 overall.

The Buffaloes came out solid in the first game recording 17 kills and holding Texas A&M to a .182 hitting percentage. The Aggies had just 15 kills on 44 attacks with seven errors.

Colorado continued to have success through most of game two and led 28-26 when the Aggies stormed back. A service error by CU libero Therese Vi?al and an attack error by Allie Griffin allowed Texas A&M to tie the game 28-28. Aggie junior Laura Jones then recorded an ace and Cristin Burton and Kendra Felder teamed to block a Griffin attack for the game-winning point.

“We've got to be able to make plays,” CU head coach Pi'i Aiu said. “We came out strong but Texas A&M scored the last four points (of game two) and on three of those points they (Texas A&M) didn't have to do a thing. Volleyball is always a game of momentum and tonight A&M took it in game two and ran with it.”

Texas A&M took control of the final two games. Blocking was key for the Aggies as they finished with 18 team blocks, the highest total given up by CU in 2004.
Colorado hit just .190 on the evening (69k-35e-179att).

Maragda Santillana led CU with 19 kills while
Griffin and Nicole Carr had 15. Griffin registered the double-double by adding 11 digs to go along with six blocks. Austin Zimmerman had a career-high 15 digs for the Buffs while Vi?al tied a personal best with 13.

Colorado will continue Big 12 action on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Missouri with an 11 a.m. MDT match time at the Hearnes Center in Columbia.
