W-GOLF IN FOURTH IN OWN HEATHER FARR
October 04, 2004 | Women's Golf
“We didn't play well on the front nine,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “But we had a pretty good comeback on the back. The good news is that we had someone step up and help Hannah (Hoch) and Maria (Persson Gulda). We're seven shots out, but we still have a chance.”
Allison Rella tied an early season low round score as she shot +2 on the front nine and went 1-under on the back to sit in third place, just three strokes off the lead, with a 1-over-par 73. She's on pace for her fourth top-10 career finish, first since a seventh-place effort at last fall's Ron Moore Collegiate in Highlands Ranch.
“Allie worked really hard this summer and it's paying off,” said Kelly. “She probably hit 15 greens in regulation today.”
Regina Rodriguez birdied her first hole and went on to shoot par on front nine and 3-over on the back for one of her best collegiate rounds, a 3-over 75, to contribute to the team score for the first time this season.
Hannah Hoch bogeyed six holes on the front nine to struggle to a 6-over 42, but shaved seven strokes off the back to bounce back with a pair of birdies on her last four holes while shooting par on the remaining seven to come out 2-under and sits in 20th place with a 77, her highest round of her sophomore season.
Maria Persson Gulda couldn't overcome a troubled short game that saw seven bogies as the junior carded a 6-over-par 78 on the 6,128-yard loop and will look to improve from her 29th place effort where she sits after today's round.
After carding a +7 on her front nine, Jessie Malcom improved five strokes to shoot just 2-over on the back for her second best career round in this tournament, an 81 for a share of 44th as is Lindsay Senger who is playing as an individual.
Also playing as individuals, sophomore Lindsay Koth was nearly assessed a late-to-the-tee 2-stroke penalty, but was spared to card a career low 83 due in part to a strong back nine that included five pars. In her first tournament as a Buff, Iowa transfer Jessica Ellis was 2-over through six, but tripled the seventh hole, and doubled the eighth before recovering to shoot par on nine to turn in a 43 on the front nine. She recovered to improve three strokes on the back for a first round 83 and a share of 57th place alongside Koth. Charlotte Persson Gulda shot par on six holes and birdied the second hole, but 11 bogeys and doubles caught up with the freshman that shot an 85 and sits in 68th place.
