W-GOLF FINISHES FOURTH AT HEATHER FARR
October 05, 2004 | Women's Golf
“I had a lot of expectations coming into today which made me nervous. This is my last home tournament so I wanted to win,” explained Rella who relished her finish after being disqualified from this tournament two years ago. “I had some great putts for birdies and really fought for this finish.”
San Jose State maintained its control of the leaderboard again Tuesday as the Spartans combined for a tournament record 296-291-587 to finish a tournament best 19 strokes ahead of second place Colorado State and Idaho, which both turned in a two-round 606. Six strokes separated the second through fifth place teams as
After shooting a 1-over-par 73 on Monday, San Jose State's Carmina Calle birdied one third of the 6,128-yard Sunshine-Vista Tournament Courses for a 4-under 68 Tuesday, the first time of her career she shot below par for the second lowest round in Heather Farr Invitational history for medalist honors. She finished three strokes ahead of first-round leader Renee Skidmore (70-74-144) of Idaho, San Jose State's Jenelle Gomez (76-69-145), and Jahanna Lundberg (70-77-147) and Rella.
“We really needed to get off to a better start. We got down in the second round, but were able to fight back and make up a little bit of ground,” said head coach
After shooting par on her first hole, Rella went 5-over before putting for birdies on 11, 12, 13 and 16 and going even on 14, 15 and 17 for a 2-under 34 on the back nine for her team low 75 and best finish since her sophomore season when she finished fifth at Oregon State. Hannah Hoch shot turned in her third consecutive top-20 finish as the sophomore shot 76 today to finish 19th with a two-round 153.
Junior Maria Persson Gulda had five bogeys and a triple on her third hole, but remained the most consistent Buff as her 6-over 78 matched her first round effort to finish 29th. Regina Rodriguez suffered a similar fate as the sophomore couldn't overcome a pair of bogeys and a quadruple bogey on her front nine as her second round 82 dropped her from 12th after Monday's first round to 33rd Tuesday with a 36-hole 157.
One of the bright spots of the day, Jessie Malcom shaved three strokes off her first to second rounds as the junior capitalized on three birdies on her final five holes to go 1-under on the back nine and move up eight places on the leaderboard as her season best 78 was CU's final score and gave her a two-round total 159 for 38th place.
Playing as individuals, Lindsay Koth (83-77-160) went 2-under on her front nine and Jessie Ellis (83-77-160) went 1-under on the back as both took six strokes off their first round scores to both finish 44th here Tuesday. After going just 3-over on her front nine, Lindsay Senger ran into a roadblock on the back to card a second straight 9-over 81 while Charlotte Persson Gulda's 85-84-169 found the freshman in 70th place in her first home tournament of her career.
“We're off to a better start regionally than in some recent seasons, but we still need to displace some teams that have been finishing ahead of us,” added Kelly as she looks ahead to next week's Bronco Invitational in
