BUFFS SEAL WIN WITH FREE THROWS DOWN THE STRETCH

February 11, 2004 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER, Colo. - Randie Wirt sank three of four free throws in the final minute, and Maria Billingsley added two to lift No. 12 Colorado to a 72-67 victory Wednesday night over Iowa State.

Tera Bjorklund led the Buffs (19-3, 8-2 Big 12) with 24 points and Kate Fagan added 10, all in the second half. Megan Ronhovde scored 19 points for Iowa State (10-11, 3-7).

Brittany Wilkins added 18 points and Mary Fox 15, as the Cyclones forged a 33-33 tie at the half.

“That was as competitive a game as we have had all year,” head coach Ceal Barry said. “Megan Ronhovde and Brittany Wilkins kept them in the game ? Ronhovde on the outside and Wilkins on the inside.”

Colorado, which dropped a 79-56 decision to Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., on Sunday ?shooting just 31 percent in that game ? was able to beat the Cyclones with a 46.3 shooting percentage on the night.

“This is the only time that I can remember that we only had one practice before a game,” guard Kate Fagan said on the quick turnaround. “We tried some new things on offense, running new plays, trying to open things for the forwards outside of the triangle. I don't think it's hard when you get beaten by 27 on the road to turn around and get up for the next team.”

The real story of the game was the defense. All told, there were 33 turnovers ? Iowa State committed 20 to the Buffs 13.

Colorado limited the Cyclones to 42.3 percent shooting in the first half, and 45.8 percent for the game, but allowed Iowa State to out-rebound them 31 to 28 with 21 of the Cyclones rebounds coming on defense.

“We played better defense in the second half,” Barry said. “ISU matched us at halftime, and I think we played our most intense defense in the second half. We were really hustling in the second half, and we got the effort that was missing this past weekend.”

Colorado turned in clutch defense down the stretch. After leading by as many as nine points in the second half, the Buffs allowed Iowa State to narrow the gap to two in the final minute. The Cyclones would have three offensive chances in the last 30 seconds, but scored only once, after turning the ball over and committing a foul.

Colorado took advantage of the miscues to put the game out of reach with Wirt and Billingsley free throws sealing the victory. With the win, the Buffs swept the season series for the second straight season.

Colorado now sets its sights on the nation's No. 1 team Texas who rolls into Boulder for a Valentine's Day showdown with the Buffs. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are still available.
