March 01, 2004 | Tennis
WESTMINSTER ? Sophomore Kristy Randono clinched the Colorado team victory with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win at No. 5 singles helping the Buffaloes women's tennis team to 5-2 win over No. 59 Kansas State, Sunday night at the Ranch Country Club in Westminster.
The win over the Wildcats was CU's first in five years and first for head coach Nicole Kenneally. The Buffaloes have won two straight, including five of its last six, while K-State falls to 3-3 and 0-1 in the Big 12. Colorado still holds the lead in the all-time series by a 17-9 margin.
“They're a team we always want to beat, because we've never beaten them in the past,” said senior Morgan Sall, who added a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 6. “There always a tough match and it was good to finally beat them.”
CU started the match clinching the all important doubles point taking two out of three points at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Kendra Strandemo and Lynzee Kever took a close 8-6 winner at No. 2, and at No. 3, the duo of Martina Sedivec and Jenny Hanson took an 8-2 winner. Hanson and Sedivec improved to 4-0 at No. 3 this spring and it also marked the sixth straight victory for Hanson at that slot this season.
In singles, CU kept one step ahead of the visitors winning the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 slots for its remaining four points. Kever rallied from a set down to upset Maria Rosenberg, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 for her sixth win in eight tries this spring. Roseneberg is the ITA's No. 83rd ranked player nationally.
Strandemo won her third match at No. 3 singles during the spring taking a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 3, while Randono and Sall took the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively in straight sets. Randono has won four of five, while Sall showed signs of her brilliance from last year that helped her win 22 matches, won her first match since Feb. 7.
“It was a tough match tonight and other than No. 6 it was a battle for at least one of the sets if not all of the sets,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “Kansas State is always competitive and they're a solid team. We're off to a good start and hopefully we can keep it going.”
Colorado (5-3, 3-1), ranked No. 49 nationally, takes to the road for a pair of matches in Albuquerque, N.M. next weekend where they will take on Boise State (Saturday, March 6) and the host Lobos (Sunday, March 7).
