METIVIER AND SCHOOLMEESTER RACE TO ALL-AMERICAN STATUS AT NCAA MEET
March 13, 2004 | Track and Field
Junior Renee Metivier took sixth in the women's 3,000 meter run in a time of 9:12.89. The time is the third fastest women's indoor 3K in school history behind Sara Gorton's marks of 9:07.16 and 9:11.55 and is a personal best for Metivier.
“Renee was affected by a blistering pace set by the winner,” said head coach Mark Wetmore. “Renee handled that and ran very well and very intelligently. Probably the most sound tactical race I've seen her run for
On the men's side, sophomore Bret Schoolmeester also earned All-America in the 3,000 meter run. His time of 8:04.84 was good for seventh place, scoring two points for CU.
“He was very smart in a tactical race that went the other way (than the women's race), we hoped it would be slow and it was,” said Wetmore. “He closed very well against a very tough field. He made his break a little sooner than he should have, but he worked his way up as far as fourth and then a couple people got by him in the last 100 meters. He was kind of an unknown guy in this meet having never made it to nationals. He ran a great meet. They both get their first All-American certificates and they're all back next year.”
