W-GOLF IN EIGHTH AT ANTEATER INVITATIONAL

Irvine, Calif. - The University of Colorado women's golf team was in third place after firing a spring low 303 in the first round of the UC-Irvine Anteater Invitational here Monday, but got back on the same rollercoaster ride they have been riding all season to card a 321 second loop and sit in eighth place with a first day 624 on the 6,061-yard layout of the Coto de Caza Golf and Raquet Club South Course.
"That first round we played the way a team should play," said head coach Anne Kelly. "Then that second round was just a picture of inconsistency. Everyone is a little frustrated as to why we've been so inconsistent."
With four players currently in the top 10, San Francisco is putting on a clinic with a 10-over 586 and is 21 strokes ahead of runner up Brigham Young (607) and 26 ahead of Michigan (612). Less than 10 strokes separates the top 20 players and the Dons' Nikki Jacoby (71-74-145) has a one stroke edge on teammate Kristi Larsen (72-74-146), while Cal-State Northridge's Elizabeth Allen (75-72-147) and USF's Joan Shimozaki (74-73-147).
Following a tough San Jose State tournament two weeks ago where she shot a three-round total 247, sophomore Maria Persson Gulda returned to form here Monday, but couldn't get her birdie putts to drop, and is back leading the Buffs with a first day 6-over par 76-74-150 for a share of ninth place, just five strokes from the leader. Following a triple and a double in the first round, Hannah Hoch recovered with all pars and birdies for the remainder of the loop and carded a team low first round 74, and a second round 78, and her 152 matches her start to the Spartan Invitational in San Jose, and has the freshman sitting in 13th place.
Hitting the ball really well for a second straight tournament, junior Allison Rella is in 46th with a two-round 76-83-159. Jessie Malcolm rounded out CU's scoring with a first round 77, her second best round of the 2003-04 season, and lowest since the season opening Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, and followed it up with a second round 86 for a 163 total and share of 59th. Following a strong fall season, senior Robin Worthington continues to struggle in the spring with an 81-88-169.
The third and final round will be an 8 a.m. (PT) shotgun start.
"Everyone seemed pretty determined tonight, and feels good about tomorrow. We need to keep our rounds under control, be consistent and have at least three players shoot a 76 or under for us to get back in this. Golf is a frustrating game at times, but we're beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We just need to find a way to put it all together."
