W-GOLF FINISHES NINTH AT IRVINE
March 16, 2004 | Women's Golf
Irvine, Calif. ? The Coto de Caza Golf and Raquet Club South Course gave the University of Colorado women's golf team another test here Tuesday in the final round of the UC-Irvine Anteater Invitational, and the Buffs responded with a third round 323 for a 54-hole total 947 to finish ninth in the 13-team field.
“Big numbers keep creeping up on us,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “We're driving the ball pretty straight, but we need to hit more greens and limit our doubles and triples. It's been a frustrating season because we know that we're a lot better than we've been playing. We need to be more consistent.”
San Francisco placed its four scorers in the top 10 and led from first to last round and the Dons' 19-over par 883 obliterated the field with 29 strokes to spare over Brigham Young (912) and host UC-Irvine (919). With an even par 216 on the 6,061-yard layout, USF's Kristin Larsen, second after Monday's rounds, edged Cal-State Northridge's Elizabeth Allen (217) and teammate Nikki Jacoby (220), who was Monday's leader after 36 holes.
The bright spot of this week's spring tournament was the play of freshman Hannah Hoch. The lone Buff to card three rounds in the 70s, her 54-hole 228 is her second best three round total of her career, and best since carding a 221 in the season opener. She is CU's low score for the first time since the Ron Moore Intercollegiate Sept. 30 and finished 15th here today, just eight strokes out of third place, for her third career top-20 effort.
“Hannah had a lot of good up and downs and capitalized on some birdies,” complimented Kelly.
In 13th place after Monday's second round, Maria Persson Gulda struggled Tuesday with an 85 to bring her three round total to 235, causing the sophomore to drop 19 places to finish in a four-way tie for 32nd.
Allison Rella improved to 45th with a third round 80 and three round scorecard 76-83-80-239, while Jessie Malcom (77-86-83-246) rounded out CU's scoring efforts for the second straight day and finished 58th.
With four strokes shaved off her second round score, senior Robin Worthington's closed out the tournament with an 81-88-84-253 scorecard for to match Monday's 69th place.
Colorado has just under two weeks to regroup before it hosts the sixth annual Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson March 27-28.
“We'll work hard on our short game. Especially chipping. We also need to be in the mindset of being tougher. Our ball striking isn't too bad, but we need to make our misses better. We show glimpses of what we can do, but we need to do it more often.
