No. 48 WOMEN NETTERS DEFEAT KANSAS, 5-2

March 20, 2004 | Tennis

BOULDER ? Senior Morgan Sall won her fifth straight including the clinching match helping the No. 48 nationally ranked University of Colorado women's tennis team to a 5-2 home victory over Kansas, Saturday afternoon at its inaugural match at the CU-Boulder South Campus Tennis Courts.

The Buffaloes are off to their best start in Big 12 play since the 1994-95 season with a 4-1 record. CU also broke a two-match losing streak and improves to 7-5. The Jayhawks fell for the fourth time in five meetings with the Buffs, are 3-9 and 2-2 in the conference.

“It's a good start for us in the Big 12 with a young team we have,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “They have all been tough matches and today was no different. Kansas is always a team you have to show up and compete. But the key is fighting and that's what we said today; fight for every point. At the end of the day, I think we succeeded.”

CU took the early advantage in the competition, taking two of three doubles points and a 1-0 lead. Sall teamed with Jessica Vanderdys at No. 1 for an 8-5 win, and at No. 2, Lynzee Kever and Kendra Strandemo took an 8-4 victory. It was Sall's and Vanderdys' sixth win in nine outings at No. 1 doubles; and Kever's/Strandemo's fourth win in six matches this spring.

In singles, CU earned points at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 positions to clinch the team victory. Kever, ranked No. 82 by the ITA won her eighth match in 11 outings at No. 1 taking a straight-set win (6-4, 6-2). Vanderdys claimed a three-set winner at No. 2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Sall officially put CU in the win column taking a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 5 singles en route to her fifth straight match dating back to Feb. 28. Jenny Hanson rounded out the team scoring taking a three-set match at No. 6, 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3.

CU heads to the road this Wednesday, March 24 at Texas-San Antonio and Saturday, March 27 at Baylor.
