W-GOLF FINISHES 14TH AT SPARTAN INVITE

March 03, 2004 | Women's Golf

CORRAL de TIERRA, Calif. ?   The women's golf team shaved 10 strokes off its first round here Tuesday to improve to 11th place after Monday's second round, only to run into trouble and card a 325 on the third and final loop here Wednesday for a 54-hole score of 325 to finish 14th at the conclusion of the Spartan Invitational at the Corral de Tierra Country Club.

We had a rough day. Everyone struggled a bit in this tournament,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “We had problems chipping, putting and hitting the fairways.  The second round is really indicative of how we're capable of playing. Today was just frustrating.”

In a field with six top-20 teams, second ranked UCLA came from behind after the second and continued to blister the field with four players in the top-10 for a 6-under-par 294-279-285-858, a solid 21 strokes ahead of No. 24 UNLV (879) who finished three strokes ahead of seventh-ranked Cal (882).  The Bruins' Charlotte Mayorkas also came from eighth place after the first round to take medalist honors with a 5-under 211, just one stroke ahead of teammate Krystal Shearer (212).

Allison Rella continued to pace the Buffs through the second round.  She was able to shave five strokes and 16 places off her first round, to stand in 18th after 36 holes with a 77-73 (her lowest round since October), and with a final round 75 Wednesday, came in as CU's low tournament score for the first time since last spring's Big 12 Tournament with a 54-hole total 225 and a share of 19th place, her seventh career top-20 finish.

Hannah Hoch made the team's biggest first to second round improvement as the freshman was 50th after a first round 79, but carded a spring low 1-over-par 73 to improve to 31st after Monday's second round, but she encountered some obstacles of her own with a third round 81 and slipped to 47th with a 233 total.

After hitting her second best opening round score of the year, senior Robin Worthington carded a second round 79 and fell to 52nd place.  Her luck continued to fall as her season high 86 today saw her finish 66th in the final standings with a 54-hole total 243.

Just not herself, a pair of streaks ended for sophomore Maria Persson Gulda this week.  Her consecutive scoring streak, dating back to last season, was halted at 19 when she failed add to the team score in Monday's second round for just the first time this season and seventh in her career.  With a tournament 81-83-83-247, and a share of 75th place, it marks just the first time in the last six tournaments that she wasn't CU's low score.  Despite taking a pair of strokes off her first round score, Jennifer Footlik dropped one place in the individual standings, going from 68th to 69th with an 82-80 36-hole effort, scoring on the latter for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Her luck ended there as the junior, just one stroke (248) behind Persson Gulda, finished 77th.

Colorado returns to the left coast in two weeks, March 15-16, when they play at the UC-Irvine Anteater Invitational on the Coto de Caza Golf Course in Irvine, Calif.  March 27-28 the Buffs will host the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
