Wirt Wins Four Awards At WBB Banquet
April 14, 2004 | Women's Basketball
BROOMFIELD , Colo. - The University of Colorado women's basketball team held its annual banquet here on Tuesday night at the Omni Interlocken. Over 300 guests attended the event to honor the 2003-04 season and recognize CU's senior class.
In a three-hour banquet filled with emotion, Colorado's staff and players said goodbye to four seniors, looked ahead to next season and remembered the last one with speeches, awards and the highlight video.
Team captain and senior Randie Wirt took home a truckload of honors, including the Coaches Award, which recognizes attitude, leadership, desire and commitment to the principles of Colorado Basketball. Wirt also took home the Crystal Adams Scholar-Athlete Award, the Chairwoman of the Boards Award and the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award. The Coaches Award is the only CU honor to be awarded every year since Ceal Barry's arrival in 1983.
Tera Bjorklund won the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award for the third-consecutive year, the first player in CU history to take home that honor three years running and also the first player to earn any award for three-straight seasons. She averaged 18.1 points per game as a senior, the leader among active Big 12 players.
Guard Kate Fagan was the winner of the Take Charge Award for her 25 charges taken this season, and was also named the Free Throw Champion for the second-straight year. The Sixth Player Award went to sophomore Amber Metoyer, who averaged 19.2 minutes per game, the sixth-most on the team, and was also the sixth-leading scorer on the squad with 6.0 ppg. Senior Maria Billingsley earned the Unsung Hero award for making the most contributions with the least amount of recognition.
Two freshmen took home honors, as guard Emily Waner was named the Rookie of the Year and Anna Nedovic was named the Most Improved Player on this year's team.
Athletic Director Dick Tharp made a special presentation to head coach Ceal Barry prior to the awarding of letters. Tharp gave Barry two basketballs, one to signify her 400th victory at Colorado and another to represent her 500th career victory. Barry also received a frame featuring a photo of her players carrying her on the court after the 400th CU win, as well as copies of her "400" and "500" win signs fans displayed at the two milestone victories.
Following the presentation of awards, seniors Billingsley, Bjorklund, Fagan and Wirt gave their traditional final remarks to the crowd. The class led the Buffaloes to four NCAA Tournament appearances, just the fourth class in CU history to do so.
