WOMEN'S TENNIS ANNOUNCES INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

BOULDER - University of Colorado women's tennis head coach Nicole Kenneally announced a trio of individual honors at its end of the season tennis banquet held on May 5.
The three student-athletes honored were Lauren Carey (Classroom Most Valuable Player); Jessica Vanderdys (Most Improved Player); and Kendra Strandemo (Clutch Player).
Carey, a graduating senior from Belleville, Ill., majored in psychology/kinesiology with a minor in business. She earned several Big 12 Commissioners Honor Roll awards, was a member of the ITA All-Academic Team in 2000-01, and was a two-time honoree of the All-Big 12 Academic team in 2001-02 and 2003-04. Carey also earned Dean's List honors twice at CU.
Vanderdys, a junior-to-be from Centreville, Va., was named CU's Most Improved Player after stepping up to the No. 2 position this spring achieving a team-best 13 spring victories and 20 wins for the season. She also won the back draw at the ITA Central Region Regional at Salt Lake City winning five consecutive matches last October. Against the Big 12, Vanderdys went 8-4.
Strandemo, a senior-to-be from Encinitas, Calif., was named the team's Clutch Player Award winner for the second straight year. In addition to being named the Big 12 Conference Position Champion at No. 3 singles, Strandemo was an impressive 12-3 at that slot, including a 9-3 mark against conference foes. She was also a stellar 5-0 during spring three-set matches and won 12 matches.
The CU women are ranked No. 71 nationally by the ITA, finished the spring 12-10 with a 6-5 mark in the conference. At the conference tournament they were seeded No. 5 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
