CU SWEEPS NO. 16 K-STATE IN BIG 12 OPENER

September 15, 2004 | Volleyball

BOULDER ? Unranked Colorado hit .297 and had a season-high 15 team blocks to upset No. 16 ranked Kansas State 30-23, 30-28, 30-26 on Wednesday night at the Coors Events Conference Center in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.

The Buffaloes, winners of four straight, improve to 6-2 overall while Kansas State falls to 5-4.

Colorado has won two straight over ranked teams and three out of its last five dating back to last season. KSU dropped its first match of 2004 against an unranked opponent.

CU's Allie Griffin led all players with 17 kills while recording nine digs and six blocks.  The junior right side hitter was one of four Buffs to hit .300 or better in the match. Griffin hit .314 (17 kills-6 errors-35 attacks), middle Austin Zimmerman hit .385 (6k-1e-13att), middle Lara Bossow hit .500 (7k-0e-14att) and setter Ashley Nu'u was a perfect 1.000 (7k-0e-7att). Nu'u tied a school record for most attacks with all ending in kills, last done by Leah Williams against Iowa State in 1994.

“This was huge for us to come out and play steady,” Griffin said. “We played really well defensively.”

Bossow led CU's blocking parade. The sophomore from Vail, Colo., had a career-high 11 block assists making her the first Buff to register double digits in blocks since Meghan Barkman had 10 against Kansas late in the 2001 season. Bossow also registered seven kills and hit above .400 for the third straight match.

Junior outside hitter Maragda Santillana scored a double-double for the Buffs with 14 kills and team-high 10 digs. Santillana, who also had six blocks, was one of six CU players with six or more digs. Sophomore Amber Nu'u came off the bench to log eight digs while twin sister Ashley and libero Kelly Masumiya each had six.

“This was a great win but it is early in the season,” CU head coach Pi'i Aiu said. “We don't want to base too much on this win. It gives us confidence, but all the games we have played this season have given us confidence.”

Kansas State hit just .138 (39k-23e-116att) and had no player reach double digits in kills. Joy Hamlin and Sandy Werner led the Wildcats with nine each.

Colorado will have its first Big 12 road test of the season Saturday, Sept.18, at the University of Texas in Austin at 5:30 p.m. MDT.
