She's the first CU women's golf since Kiersten Allbright in the 1998 Heather Farr Memorial Invitational to take medalist honors and just the second in 11 seasons. She has finished second in two tournaments, including last week's season opener in
Hoch overcame the wet, windy, cold and worst conditions, “and on the verge of snow, but playable” head coach Anne Kelly has ever coached in to birdie four of her last six holes, and capitalized on the demoralized attitudes of players in the field to win by five strokes over second round leader Joan Shimozaki of San Francisco and Denver's Emily Hoeper who each carded a three-round 223 and improve from fifth Monday to win today.
“I've been so close for a while that it was nice to finish it off. And If you're going to be out there for six or seven hours, why not play well anyway,” said Hoch on the eventual seven-hour final loop. “I really used (how other players were feeling about the conditions) to my advantage and was really careful to keep a positive attitude and play smart and patient.”
While Tuesday's average team score went up 12.3 strokes over Monday's second round, the Buffs shaved a pair of strokes off their 311 second round to turn in a 309, the second lowest final round of the day and improve from ninth to finish sixth with a 306-311-309-926 scorecard. They were one of just two schools to improve off the second round, joining
San Francisco, who trailed BYU after Monday's second round, shot a final round 315 while the Cougars carded a 324, to take the top team award as the Lady Dons finished with a 291-302-315-908, just one stroke ahead of Iowa State and four ahead of BYU. Host
Maria Persson Gulda followed Hoch's lead and improved 13 places to finish 13th with a 74-79-75-228, as did Allison Rella who shot a 79-80-77-236 to improve from 60th to finish 37th today. Lindsay Senger (82-79-86-247) rounded out CU's scorecard to slip one spot on the leaderboard and finished 69th while Jessie Malcom inched up one position to finish 72nd (80-83-85-248).
Individuals Regina Rodriguez (85-87-81-253) and Charlotte Persson Gulda (79-80-97-256) finished 79th and 82nd, respectively.
After two straight weeks of tournaments, the Buffs will take next week off from competition before hosting the Heather Farr Memorial, Oct. 4-5 at the Omni Interlocken in
“We're improving, but we still have a way to go. The rest of our team can learn a lot from Hannah. She's tough, steady, strong and consistent,” said Kelly. “We had to count an 86, but we realize that had that 86 been a 78/79, we would be right there. We know what we need to do to improve, and that's a positive. And this gives me confidence into playing at home,” concluded Hoch.
