Women's Soccer Beats Texas Tech 5-0

October 28, 2005 | Soccer

LUBBOCK, Texas - The University of Colorado women's soccer team wrapped up their regular season in style, beating the Texas Tech Lady Raiders by a score of 5-0 here Friday night.

"We played very well against a team that had nothing to play for but came out very excited to play," said CU head coach Bill Hempen.  "We kept the ball away from them and picked them apart and some of the goals we scored were good goals.  We found some good shots."

Katie Griffin led the Buffaloes with two goals on the evening, giving her a team high nine for the season.  Griffin got her first goal of the night, the game-winner, at the 21:46 mark when she chipped Tech keeper Megan Knauss from a tough angle and it found the back of the net.

CU got their second goal less than four minutes later from an unlikely source.  Freshman defender Michelle Wenino took a pass from classmate Nikki Keller and turned and ripped a shot from 18 yards out at the top of the box, hitting the crossbar and going straight down and bouncing into the side netting to beat the keeper just 25:44 minutes into the match.  It was her first career goal.

Sophomore Allison Kidd scored her third goal of the season, the second in her home state, and the third of the game for CU on an unassisted blast from 25 yards out at the 39:36 mark to round out the first half scoring.  The Buffs finished the first half with eight shots to Texas Tech's two.

The second half saw two more goals from the Buffaloes, as Griffin notched her second of the night off a cross from Allison Kidd.  Kidd served a solid cross to Griffin, who hit a one timer at the 54:39 mark.

Senior Kathryn Grandinetti wrapped up the box score for the Buffaloes with her second goal of the season, taking a cross on a hard-fought play by freshman Alex Cousins. Kat then beat the keeper one on one to push the final result to 5-0.

"Everybody played that is healthy so that's always nice," said Hempen. "We played very well, but got a little sloppy at times, and Texas Tech came out and forced us to play well, make good passes, and we scored fantastic goals as a result.

Kirstin Radlinski earned her second win and second shutout in her third career start.

Colorado moves to 10-6-3 on the season, 6-3-1 in the Big 12.  That creates quite a logjam near the top of the Big 12 standings as CU, Iowa State and Kansas all have a record of 6-3-1.  CU has the tiebreaker over both Iowa State and Kansas, having defeated both of them in regular season play.

Making the situation more interesting was the ISU 2-0 win over Nebraska earlier Friday, giving the Huskers a record of 5-3-1.  They play at Texas Tech on Sunday in a game that was rescheduled because of Hurricane Rita travel issues.  Should the Huskers beat Texas Tech and move to 6-3-1 in Big 12 play, things will get very interesting with four teams posting identical records.

Tiebreakers for the Big 12 Tournament seeding are head-to-head results, then goal differential, followed by goals against, followed by goals for.  The Big 12 Championships Committee will determine the winners of the tiebreakers and the seeding will be announced on Sunday after the conclusion of the Texas Tech vs. Nebraska match.

The Big 12 Tournament gets underway next Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Blossom Athletic Complex in San Antonio, Texas.
