Golfers Finish Third At Pepperdine
October 04, 2005 | Men's Golf
SATICOY, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team overcame a tough course with tough pin placements in windy conditions in moving up from fifth into a third place finish here Tuesday as the Pepperdine Club Glove Intercollegiate came to a close.
San Diego State pulled away in the final nine holes to earn the victory, as the Aztecs posted an 893 team score to win by 16 shots over host Pepperdine (909). The Buffs shot the second best team score in the final round (12-over 300) to close with a 914 total, as the Buffs leap-frogged No. 20 Coastal Carolina (sixth, 933) and No. 30 Louisville (fourth, 919) Tuesday to improve to the third place standing. UC-Irvine snagged fifth with a 924 score.
Pepperdine (all five players), CU and San Diego State (four each) dominated in combining to place 13 players in the top 25 finishers.
Senior Edward McGlasson paced the Buffaloes with a 223 total, firing a final round 76 on the 6,985-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club course. A challenging layout, the course won Tuesday as no player in the 62-man field bettered or equaled par, with only five rounds better than 76. McGlasson, tied for second after 36 holes, was only passed in the standings as two of the four 73s on the day were recorded by the two players who went by him on the final leaderboard.
Despite five top 41 teams in the field, 77 of the 185 scores posted in the meet were 80 or higher; there was just one round in the 60s, with McGlasson's second round 71 the only other round in the tournament under par.
Redshirt freshman Derek Tolan also shot a 76 to move up from 12th to a seventh-place tie in the standings, ending with a 228 total; his first round 72 was one of only five par rounds in the competition. Senior Kenny Coakley was one of the day's biggest movers, as he too posted a 76 for a 231 total, zooming from 23rd to a tie for 13th.
Assistant coach Brad Neher again coached the team this week, as head coach Mark Simpson stayed behind in Boulder continuing radiation and chemotherapy treatments in a second battle against cancer within the past year. He hopes to make the next road trip with the team later this month.
“Overall, this was another good tournament for us,” Neher said. “We didn't play to our potential, but the course was extremely difficult, a true test of golf and a good measurement for everybody to see where their games stand. Their attitude was great again, and every one hung in there. That's hard to do when it's a struggle to make par on most of the holes, especially with the wind blowing the way it was.”
“Edward played real solid, all he needs is a little bit of work on his short game and he's going to win some tournaments,” Neher continued. “Derek played his last three holes five-over (bogey-triple-bogey), very uncharacteristic him, but that can happen on a course like this. He hit a ball out of bounds and then his second one was in the trees, so it was just one of those holes where one bad shot can lead to a big number. But we kept those to a minimum as most teams endured many more than us.”
San Diego State's David Palm defeated teammate Josh Warthen on the first playoff hole, as Palm shot a final round 77 with Warthen catching him with a 73; both closed at 4-over 220, with Palm eventually riding his first round 68 to medalist honors.
Sophomore Jim Grady rounded out CU's top 25 effort, as he tied for 24th (77?234). His younger brother Pat, also a soph, tied for 46th (80?243).
“Everyone learned what they need to do to compete in a championship, because this was a championship type golf course,” Neher added. “We've been in contention in both of our tournaments, and today, we were playing pretty darn good in the middle of the round and had it near even par, so we may have been near the lead. We have two tournaments left this month, this fall, so we'll see what we can do.”
The Buffs return to action in two weeks, returning to California for The Prestige at PGA West in Palm Springs on October 17-18.
