GOLFERS HAVE RECORD DAY IN HAWAII

HILO, Hawaii - The University of Colorado men's golf team had a record day in pristine conditions, as the Buffaloes are tied for fourth after the first round here Wednesday in the 15th Annual Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate.
In perfect 72-degree weather with virtually no wind, just 10 strokes separated the top nine teams following the first 18 holes, with No. 2 Oklahoma State leading the way with an eye-opening 24-under team score of 264. As remarkable as the Cowboys score was, No. 10 Southern California was lagging by just stroke as the Trojans recorded a 265 total. No. 17 Augusta State was third at 270, followed by the Buffaloes, No. 30 Washington and No. 50 Kansas, all in at 16-under 272. No. 16 TCU was in seventh at 273, and No. 3 Georgia Tech and Arkansas were tied for eighth at 274.
All told, there are eight top 20 teams and 12 top 50 teams competing in this meet, affording the Buffaloes a chance to move up in the rankings with a good showing; Colorado came in ranked No. 62 by Golfweek and No. 63 by GolfStat.
Colorado's 16-under par team total blew away the previous school record for the most strokes under par in a single round. The old mark had been 9-under par accomplished three different times, last in the second round at the 1992 Fresno State Lexus Classic with Jonathan Kaye, Scott Peterson and Jamie Dawson all recording rounds in the 60s. That meet featured five player scores counting toward the team total; the other two occasions featured the standard four scores that counted: in the second round of the 1981 Big Eight Championships, led by the trifecta of Steve Jones, Rick Cramer and tournament medalist Terry Kahl, and in the first round of the 1979 Oklahoma City All-College Golf Classic, again with the Jones-Cramer-Kahl trio leading the way. They led the charge to a 271 that day on a par-70 track, the only lower gross score in CU history than Wednesday's round.
A CU quartet of juniors Edward McGlasson (67), Kenny Coakley (68) and Blake Moore (68) with freshman Shea Sena (69) also accomplished another first in Buff history, as it marked the first time four Colorado linksters have posted scores in the 60s in the same round.
McGlasson is tied for 12th overall, with Coakley and Moore tied for 17th and Sena for 31st, enabling Colorado to be one of five teams to record four rounds in the 60s and place all four in the top 31 in the standings through the first day along with OSU, USC, Georgia Tech and Arkansas.
"The guys played well, no doubt about it, but we all feel we can still play better," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "We absolutely believe we're capable of posting a score like Oklahoma State or USC did today in these kind of conditions. They were pretty tame, virtually no wind and with a shorter layout, the course was at the mercy of guys who can hit it a long way. It can be quite blustery here, and still can this week depending on the trade winds. But the Buffs came out and played very solid with very few mistakes."
There was a three-way tie for the individual lead among Kansas' Tyler Docking, Oklahoma State's Tyler Leon and Augusta State's Emmett Turner, all of whom recorded 8-under par 64s. Docking had the low nine of the entire round, as he carded a 30 on the front side of the 6,687-yard, par 72 Waikoloa Village Course
The second round of the tournament is slated for Thursday with the final round set for Friday.
