Three Buffs competed in day one of the NCAA Indoor National Championships finishing up the indoor season at the University of Arkansas. Distance runners Renee Metevier, Christine Bolf and Brent Vaughn had a chance to compete against the top runners from around the nation in a much-anticipated event.
The female Buffs both ran a heated race against sixteen other athletes in the 5000-meter run. Renee placed sixth with a time of 16:08.72 followed by Christine coming in tenth respectively with a time of 16:22.22. "Renee went out aggressively and lead for most of the race. She fought for her spot till the very end and ended up in sixth place. Her pace was very fast and up until the last 4 laps she was doing very well. As for Christina, she also ran a fast paced race and we found this to be a fatal mistake in the end" commented Coach Mark Wetmore.
Brent Vaughn took eighth place in his first NCAA race in the men's 5000-meter, with a time of 13:50.62. "We know that in men's races the runners are more careful and tactful so we told Brent that if he was going to place he would likely have to take the lead" said Mark. "He had the lead from 400 to 4600 meters, and then the other runners took over."
Renee will have another chance to improve her standing when she competes in the 3000-meter tomorrow in the second and final day of the championships. The women's 3000-meter is scheduled to run at 7:35 p.m. Central Time.
The Buffaloes will return to the track for the start of the outdoor season on March 19, at the Potts Collegiate Invitational here in Boulder.
