No. 16 Baylor Takes 5-2 Win Over No. 54 CU Women's Tennis

March 06, 2005 | Tennis

BOULDER - Junior Jessica Vanderdys won both her singles and doubles match, but the No. 54 University of Colorado women's tennis team fell to the No. 16 Baylor Bears, taking five of six singles points to defeat the Buffaloes, 5-2 late Saturday night at the Harvest House.  Colorado drops to 6-4 overall this spring and is now 1-2 in the Big 12 conference.

“Today we fought hard,” head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “We were happy with the way we played today.  Baylor is a good team (and) we just came up a little short.”

Colorado's first point came at doubles.  The 49th ranked duo of Vanderdys and Kendra Strandemo won a close match, 9-7, to remain a perfect 2-0 on the spring season.  Strandemo and Vanderdys are now 8-3 on the year overall.  The clinching match for the doubles point came at the No. 3 position, with junior Jenny Hanson and sophomore Lynzee Kever  posting a 8-6 victory over Baylor's Zuzana Krchnakova and Iva Mihaylova.  Hanson and Kever improve to 9-6 overall.

In singles, Vanderdys took home a narrow 7-6, 5-7, 3-3 default win over Daniela Covello at No. 3.  Covello retired midway through the third set because Baylor already had clinched the overall match.  Vanderdys nevertheless won her 46th career match.

Elsewhere in singles, senior Kendra Strandemo kept it close with Baylor's Zuzana Cerna, but was defeated in three sets; Gleisy Torres Torres played in an eight-game pro set because the match was running late and lost 8-2;  Kever lost in straight sets to No. 57 Zuzana Zemenova 6-4, 6-1, while No. 4 and No. 5 singles players Veera Nurmi and Martina Sedivec also fell in straight sets.

Colorado will try to even their weekend on Sunday against the No. 32 New Mexico Lobos.  It will be played at the Ranch Country Club in Westminster with a 2 p.m. start.
