Vaughn, Metivier, Florence Advance to Finals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? University of Colorado sophomore Brent Vaughn ran the top time in heat one of the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:21.04, and senior Renee Metivier ran to a fifth placing in her 5,000-meter heat to qualify for Saturday's final at the 2005 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. June 8-11.
Four CU distance runners participated Wednesday night in the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships.
Metivier qualified in the women's 5000 meters with a season-best 16:19.37 to place her 10th overall.
Men's 5k final is Saturday, June 11 at 8:50 p.m., while the women's 5k follows at 9:10 p.m. (mountain).
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Natalie Florence broke her own school record clocking in a time of 10:08.31 to finish third in heat one. Florence surpassed her 10:12.26 at the Big 12 Championships back on May 15. Her time on Wednesday placed fifth overall out of the two qualifying heats and was just off the top spot of 10:07.02 held by Butler's Victoria Mitchell.
The 3000-meter steeplechase finals are Friday, June 10, 8:05 p.m. (mountain).
In the men's 3000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Bill Nelson finished eighth in heat one, however sprinted just .35 seconds off his personal mark of 8:46.36. He finished 17th overall of the two heats with a time of 8:46.71 where the top 5 from each heat advance plus the next best four.
On the track Thursday will be Stephen Pifer in the men's 1500 meters, and Bret Schoolmeester and Sara Slattery in the 10,000 meters for men and women, respectively.
