Soccer Captures 100th Win, 3-0, Over Texas Tech

October 20, 2006 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team captured the 100th win of the program's short history on Friday against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a dominating 3-0 victory in Boulder.

"I thought we played a lot better," said head coach Bill Hempen.  "When you lose some of those games that we did earlier sometimes it can gut you and there was a question if that would happen to us."

As soon as the first whistle blew it was clear that the Buffaloes were not ready to let up.  Colorado almost got on the board early when Allison Kidd hustled down the right flank and blasted a shot at Texas Tech's goalkeeper Tina Rincon.  Freshman Nikki Marshall was on the receiving end of the deflected save and followed up with another shot to force a corner kick.

Colorado would convert on the corner kick as Kidd sent a perfect ball into the middle of the box.  Alex Cousins wasn't able to get a solid head on the ball but Jess Quador was sitting on the back post and headed the ball in to give CU the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of the game.

At the 22:56 mark Colorado would strike again as Cousins took a pass and knocked it to Marshall with the heel of her foot.  Marshall exploded through the Texas Tech defense and hit a ball around the keeper into the back left of the net.

Marshall's goal was her 11th of the season and also gives her a new school record for goals scored as a freshman.  Last weekend Marshall tied teammate Katie Griffin's freshman record with her 10th goal against Iowa State.  She trails the CU single season record of 12 (Katie Griffin, 2005) by just one.

CU made it 3-0 on a Katie Griffin goal in the 29th minute.  Senior Allie True played a perfect ball from the left post of the goal to Griffin in the center of the box.  Griffin one-touched a well-struck shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal, which would prove to be the final goal of the match.

The Buffaloes dominated the half time stats with 16 shots, eight of which were on goal.  The Red Raiders were only able to get off seven shots with only three of them on frame.

"I feel like it is the first time in a long that we actually connected as a team," said senior Allie True.  "I think we're starting to believe in ourselves more and have fun."

The second half saw similar action with Colorado controlling the offensive stats with 13 shots, six of which were on goal to Texas Tech's two shots.  Colorado's keeper Kirstin Radlinski would finish with the win and three saves before she was replaced by freshman Kara Linder with 20 minutes left to play.  Despite giving up three first half goals, Texas Tech's Rincon managed to record a total of nine saves before being relieved by Colleen Pitts.

Colorado finished the game with 29 shots, 14 of which were on goal.  Linder made one save in her 20 minutes of play.  Pitts saved two CU shots on goal in her 21 minutes of play.   Colorado is now 9-5-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in Big 12 play.  Texas Tech falls to 6-10-2, 1-6-1 in Big 12 contests.

Colorado got all their reserve field players into the game, including sophomore Michelle Wenino who has been out since Oct. 1 with a hyperextended knee.  Quador's goal was her third game-winner of the season (Denver, Wyoming) and ties her with Marshall for the team lead.  Cousins now has a team high five assists on the season, the seventh-highest total in CU history.

"I'm thinking about Baylor next," said Hempen.  "We did this to ourselves and we have to get ourselves out of it.  Scoring early was a good confidence builder and it certainly made life easier."

Colorado will take on the Baylor Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m. to wrap up senior weekend at Prentup Field.  Colorado will recognize the senior class of Katie Griffin, Laura Munnelly and Allie True following the game.  As always, admission and parking are free.
