Golfers Wrap Fall With Seventh Place At Pepperdine
October 24, 2006 | Men's Golf
SOMIS, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team completed its fall season here Tuesday with a seventh place finish in the 8th Annual Pepperdine Club Glove Intercollegiate,
The Buffs closed with their best collective round of the tournament, but were unable to make up enough ground to improve on their seventh place standing through 36 holes. No. 10 Lamar, the first day leader, finished with an 893 team score and cruised to an 11-shot win over New Mexico and host Pepperdine.
Colorado, ranked No. 44 by Golfweek, finished 30 shots out of the lead with a 923 score, but its 299 final round effort tied for the second best team score in Tuesday's third and final round, topped only by Houston (which finished fourth) and matched by Lamar and UNM.
CU junior Michael Baird, who transferred to CU from Pepperdine last June, had a successful return to his original college locale, as he tied for 13th individually with a 228 score for 54 holes. He carded a final round 77 on the 6,985-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club course, a challenging and tight layout. There wasn't a single round in the 60s recorded by any of the 62 players in the field (186 rounds), with just one 2-under par 70 and five 1-under 71s, one of which was logged by Baird in Monday's second round.
Junior Patrick Grady put together a solid round, a 1-over 73, closing with a 230 total and improved 11 spots in the standings to snare a top 20 finish, as he tied for 20th with UC-Riverside's Andrew Cortez. Senior Blake Moore recorded one of just three even-par scores (72) in the final round, as he and freshman Luke Symons tied for 27th with 18-over 234 totals; Symons logged a 77 in the final round, the same score posted by sophomore Derek Tolan who tied for 44th overall with a 239.
“I think overall, the fall went all right,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said in summing up his first semester at the reins of the Buffalo program. “We had some good tournaments on some tough courses, and I saw a lot of good things overall. We had individual rounds by everybody that leads me to believe that we might really be able to string things together in spring. If we can follow through and do that,, this can be a really good team.
“We had a great team meeting prior to the last round, and I really thought the guys came out committed today,” he added. “They controlled their emotions, stayed focused and really competed, and I was pleased with their effort. Any score under 300 on this golf course is a successful round.”
New Mexico's Charlie Beljan posted the only subpar score in the final round, and rode that 71 to a 2-over 218 total and a one-shot win over Xavier's Jason Kokrak and Houston's Ricky Romano.
The Buffaloes will resume tournament play the first week in February in style, at the Hawai'i Hilo Intercollegiate.
