BOULDER-- Sophomore men's track and field long jumper Hugh Charles and freshman skier Lisa Perricone were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 30-February 6. This is both athletes' first CU Athlete of the Week honor.
Charles, a Southlake, Texas (Keller) native, recorded a personal record of 24-05.75 in the long jump in his first meet of the season. The leap was the second longest in school history, and helped him take top honors at the Air Force Invitational, jumping almost a full foot-and-a-half longer than the runner up and helping the CU men to a second-place finish at the invite.
Perricone, a Steamboat Springs, Colo. (Steamboat Springs) native, won her first collegiate after three previous top five finishes this winter in claiming the women's slalom at the CU Invitational/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial in a time of 1:29.20. She posted the fastest times in both runs, 43.91 the first time down the course, which featured over a 420-foot descent, and a 45.29 on her second trip. It was the first time the western conference women skied at night in a collegiate competition in preparation for night slaloms in next month's NCAA Championships. She finished 11th in Friday's giant slalom and helped CU to its first win since 2003 as the Buffaloes won in convincing fashion.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Chris Copeland (men's basketball), Josh Bryan (men's skiing), Marek Dvorak (men's tennis), Ewa Losinski (women's tennis), and Whitney Law (women's basketball).
Men's Basketball: Chris Copeland, Senior, Richmond, Va.
Copeland scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in CU's lone game of the week that saw the Buffs fall at Iowa State, 96-79. The Buffaloes, nationally ranked for the first time in either poll came into the game as the No. 25 ranked team in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Up as many as 10 points in the opening four minutes of the game, the Cyclones erased their deficit and stormed back eventually taking a 10-point halftime lead they would not relinquish halting CU's five-game winning streak. The Buffaloes are now 15-4 overall and 5-3 in the conference and are still ranked No. 25.
Men's Skiing: Josh Bryan, Freshman, Edina, Minn.
Bryan finished eighth in the men's slalom in the CU Invitational/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial held in Steamboat Springs. In the first night race ever in the NCAA West, the CU freshman was in first place after his first run (45.01), but finished eighth overall in a 1:27.94 time. With the top 30 skiers inverted for the start of the second run, he started well down the line with the course deteriorating with each and every skier. He finished 15th in Saturday's giant slalom as CU won the meet, its first victory since the 2003 season.
Men's Tennis: Marek Dvorak, Junior, Prague, Czech Republic
Dvorak won both of his matches during week in straight sets helping the No. 51 ranked Buffaloes remain unbeaten at 4-0. He won the clinching match at No. 6 to knock off No. 54 Utah. During last year's contest with Utah, Dvorak dropped the deciding match, however this season, the outcome was much different in defeating Dan Mascall, 6-2, 7-6 (0). Dvorak won the first set with little trouble, then in the second set rallied from a 5-4 deficit forcing the match into a tiebreaker. Dvorak then won all seven points in the tiebreaker clinching the match for the Buffs. The Buffaloes went on to defeat No. 71 Montana State the following day, 6-1. Dvorak is 2-1 in the dual season and 13-7 for the year.
Women's Tennis: Ewa Losinski, Freshman, Melbourne, Australia
Losinski won a pair of matches extending her dual match record to 6-0. Losinski clinched CU's team victory over Washington State, 4-3 at the No. 3 singles slot, upsetting No. 81 Marjolein van de Ven, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(6). Coupled with the win over Gonzaga the following day, the Buffaloes are now off to their best start since last year when they also began 5-1. CU is No. 41 nationally.
Women's Basketball: Whitney Law, Senior, Littleton, Colo.
Law dropped 21 points, leading the Buffs to a 77-71 road victory over Kansas, their second Big 12 win this year. Playing all but 36 seconds of the game, she also made her first six shots not missing until there were just 44 seconds remaining in the half. She also added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. In a 69-64 losing effort to Texas later in the week, Law aided the Buffs with 11 points seven rebounds and five assists.
