Hazen and Hutmacher Power Way to CU Athletes of the Week

March 08, 2006 | General, Men's Basketball, Men's Golf, Tennis, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Senior men's weight thrower Zach Hazen and junior weight thrower Cortney Hutmacher were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of February 28-March 6. This is both Hazen and Hutmacher's first CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year.

Hazen, a Germantown, Tenn. (Houston) native, tied his school record with a mark of 61-7.75 at the Don Barret Open at the Air Force Academy. It was the first time this season Hazen has thrown over 61 feet, but was just shy of the provisional qualifying mark of 62-4.

Hutmacher, a Killdeer, N.D. (Killdeer) native, threw a 62-8.50 at the Don Barrett Open at the Air Force Academy. It was good enough to provisionally qualify her for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend in Fayetteville, Ark., March 10-11. It was a full foot further than Hutmacher has thrown in her career. Hutmacher set the previous school record of 61-8.50 last weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Others nominated for this week's award were: Richard Roby (men's basketball), Chad Tsuda (men's tennis), Edward McGlasson (men's golf) and Veera Nurmi (women's tennis).

Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Sophomore, San Bernardino, Calif.

Roby recorded team-highs with 24 points, five assists and four blocked shots leading the Colorado men's basketball team to an 84-82 victory over Iowa State on Senior Night. With the win, the Buffaloes (19-8, 9-7 Big 12) clinched the No. 5 seed at the Big 12 Tournament and will play No. 12 Baylor on Thursday (1:00 p.m. MST, ESPN U and Altitude). Roby also grabbed seven rebounds and was 9-of-9 from the free throw line in 37 minutes of work against the Cyclones.

Men's Tennis: Chad Tsuda, Senior, Boulder, Colo.

Tsuda won three straight singles matches and teamed up for two doubles victories with Peter Bjork helping the Colorado men's tennis team to three victories over this past weekend against New Mexico, New Mexico State and Portland. Tsuda won his three singles matches in straight sets improving his personal record to a team-best 7-1 this spring. CU is 7-3 and ranked No. 49 nationally.

Men's Golf: Edward McGlasson, Senior, Orange, Calif.

McGlasson tied for seventh with a 70-71-74--215 scorecard, good for 1-under par, to lead Colorado to a second place finish in the Houston All-American Intercollegiate. It was McGlasson's fourth top seven finish in six meets this season.

Women's Tennis: Veera Nurmi, Sophomore, Lahti, Finland

Nurmi picked up her fourth straight victory winning her No. 4 singles match in three sets in CU's 4-3 loss to No. 67 Kansas State. Nurmi has won seven of her last eight matches and leads the Buffaloes with team-high 17 victories this season. CU is 7-4 (1-2 Big 12) on the season.
