April 11, 2006 | General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Track and Field
BOULDER-- Junior men's tennis player Eric Molnar and freshman women's tennis player Franziska Jendrian were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the weeks of April 4-April 10. This is both Molnar's second (Sept. 20) and Jendrian's (Jan. 24) second CU Athlete of the Week honor of the year.
Molnar, a Guelph, Ontario (Centennial HS) native, won three singles matches and two doubles matches last weekend helping the Colorado men's tennis team to a 3-1 record. Molnar played the No. 1 singles slot for the Buffaloes and upset a pair of the nation's top-10 players; No. 7 Travis Helgeson, 6-4, 7-6 (5) of Texas and No. 8 Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M, 6-1, 6-1.
Earlier in the week he defeated Vinnie Fallico of Northern Colorado, 6-2, 6-3. The Buffaloes (15-6, 4-1 Big 12) defeated Northern Colorado twice, No. 19 Texas A&M, 4-2 for the first time since 1998, and lost to No. 3 Texas, 5-2.
In doubles, Molnar teamed up with Marko Bundalo to defeat Texas' No. 1 pair, 8-6; and a tandem from Northern Colorado. Molnar is 4-1 in Big 12 singles matches this season and 22-13 for the year.
In addition to winning the CU Athlete of the Week honor, Molnar has also been named the Big 12 Conference Men's Tennis player of the week.
Molnar and the rest of the men's tennis team will close out the home side of the schedule this Friday, April 14 when they host No. 23 Boise State and this Sunday, April 16 when they host Denver. Both matches begin at 1 p.m. MST at the South Boulder Tennis Courts.
???????Jendrian, a Rodleben, Germany (Sportgymnasium Magdeburg) native, won a key singles match and tallied a pair of doubles victories with teammate Monica Milewski, helping the Colorado women's tennis team to a 1-1 record.
The Buffaloes defeated Oklahoma, 4-3 as Jendrian rallied in her No. 5 singles match from a set down winning her last two sets 6-3, 6-3. Against the Sooners, Jendrian/Milewski won their lone match at No. 2, 8-5. The CU pair duplicated its triumph picking up and clinching the key doubles point against Oklahoma State, 8-6. The CU women are 10-7 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
Others nominated for this week's Edward McGlasson (men's golf) and Anthony Chiulli (men's track and field).
Men's Golf: Edward McGlasson, Senior, Orange, Calif.
Though he couldn't match his first day magic in the final round, McGlasson finished fourth in The Courtyard By Marriott Intercollegiate in Cary, N.C. McGlasson, playing individually while most of the other Buffaloes completed a one-tournament suspension, went into the final round in the lead, the first time in his career he was in that position. It was his sixth-straight top 10 effort, landing him in the Colorado record book for the most consecutive top 10 finishes in major tournament play. He battled all day to hang around par, but played the last three holes 3-over par to finish with a 76, or 4-over par on the 6,878-yard, par-72 McGregor Downs Country Club course. His 210 total for three rounds also tied for the ninth best 54-hole score on a par-72 course in school history. His sixth straight top 10 finish in a major tournament, toppled the old mark of five that had been held by a pair of fairly notable men in CU history, Hale Irwin in 1966-67 and John Lindberg in 1989. He also moved into sixth place all-time at CU in top 10 efforts, as this was his 12th.
Men's Track and Field: Anthony Chiulli, Sophomore, Memphis, Tenn.
Chiulli recorded a personal-best and a regional qualifying mark in the men's 800-meter run at the Colorado Invitational on April 8. He finished in 1:49.98, the fastest time in the event for a CU racer this year.
