Women's Golf Eighth at Susie Maxwell
April 09, 2006 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. - Thanks to a three stroke second round improvement, the University of Colorado women's golf team currently sits in eighth place at the Susie Maxwell Berning Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma here Sunday.
The Buffs are tied with Oral Roberts with a team total of 607 after shooting 305 in the morning and 302 in the afternoon. Oklahoma State leads the tournament with a nine-under 567, the only team under par so far and 29 strokes ahead of second place schools SMU and Texas, both at 596, good for +20. OSU has all five of their golfers in the top 10.
"We're playing well, and I'm pleased we were still three shots better this afternoon despite having to take an 80," said head coach Anne Kelly. "I always say that we're so close, but it's because we are. We are consistently getting three good scores, and we just need our fourth or fifth player to consistently perform and we'll be in contention in these meets."
Freshman Lindsay Caljouw led the way for Colorado again, shooting a first round 75 followed by a second round 73. She is tied for 15th in the individual standings, shooting for her second-straight top 20 finish this week after taking 20th at the Northwestern Invitational last week.
"This course is playing really short so far," said Kelly. "Caljouw has the distance to hit a lot of par fives in two shots, and she rallied off some birdies today because of it. She ran into trouble a couple of times, but if she can keep hitting those solid shots it gives her a great chance to put up some good scores."
Hannah Hoch put up back-to-back three-over 75 rounds today, and is sitting in 21st place, just out of the top 20. It would be a great boost for the junior, who hasn't been in the top 20 since taking 14th at the CU Heather Farr Memorial in October.
"Hannah is hitting the ball real well, and her play around the greens has been solid too," said Kelly. "She just needs to keep that putter going all round and we're going to see her scores be where she wants them."
Senior Maria Persson-Gulda takes home the most improved honors for the first and second round for the Buffaloes. She put up an 80 in the morning round and bounced back for a 74 in the afternoon. Her 154 total is good for a tie for 44th in the standings.
Lindsay Koth was Colorado's fourth finisher in Sunday play. Koth shot a 76 in the first round and then struggled in the afternoon with an 80. Lindsay Senger had similar trouble, with a 79 in the morning and an 85 in the afternoon.
"Both Koth and Senger have the same ability to hit long and shorten up this course," said Kelly. "We just need to keep them out of trouble and eliminate some of the bogeys and doubles and we'll be there."
The final round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Inviatioanl tees off on Monday. Then the Buffs will get the 10th Annual Big 12 Conference Tournament underway next week in Lincoln, starting April 16.
