Hutmacher and Dodson Record CU Athlete of the Week Honors
January 23, 2007 | General, Track and Field
BOULDER-- Track team members, Jeremy Dodson, a sophomore sprinter, and Cortney Hutmacher, a senior thrower, were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of January 14-20. This is the first CU athlete of the week honor of the year for both Dodson and Hutmacher, and is Hutmacher's second career honor. This marks the third consecutive instance that a single sport has swept the honor as basketball and skiing have swept the previous two respectively.
Dodson, a Denver, Colo., (George Washington/Arkansas) native, recorded a Balch Fieldhouse record in the 200 meter dash on Friday, Jan. 19 at the 2007 Potts Indoor Invite in Boulder, Colo. Dodson won the 200-meter with a time of 21.67, breaking the Balch Fieldhouse record of 22.03, set by Dave McCloughan of CU in 1988. The meet was Dodson's first as a Buffalo, since transferring from Arkansas. Dodson also ran in the 60-meter dash, claiming third-place at 6.84.
Hutmacher, a Kill Deer, N.D., (Kill Deer) native, recorded her second, first-place finish on the year in as many tries and a Balch Fieldhouse record, in the women's weight throw with a heave of 60-04.50. Hutmacher won the event last week at Air Force in the Buffs' opening meet of the 2007 season, surpassing her 59-09.50 throw of a week ago. Hutmacher is the school record holder in the event (62-08.50).
Others nominated for this week's Xavier Silas (Men's Basketball), Jasmina Ilic (Women's Basketball), Kit Richmond (Skiing) and Marie Grevsgaard (Skiing).
Men's Basketball: Xavier Silas, Freshman, Austin, Texas
Silas averaged 16 points and 6 rebounds in helping Colorado to a 1-1 record last week in Big 12 Conference competition. He recorded 19 points and five rebounds on 6-9 shooting, including 4-5 from beyond the arch in CU's 74-65 win over Iowa State this past Wednesday. Silas led the Buffs' in scoring for the second consecutive game when he recorded 13 points in the 71-50 loss at Nebraska this past Saturday; he also added seven rebounds.
Women's Basketball: Jasmina Ilic, Senior, Becej, Serbia
Ilic recorded a season-high 29 points in Colorado's 82-67 loss to No.6/7 Oklahoma this past Saturday. Ilic helped the Buffs come back and take the lead in the second half after trailing by double-digits for portions of the game. Ilic shot 12-13 from the charity stripe and recorded two steals to help CU frustrate the Sooners.
Skiing: Kit Richmond, Junior, Red Deer, Alberta.
Richmond won his first race of the season, the 10k freestyle at the Montana State Invitational, and he also finished 10th in the 20k classic race in helping CU increase its lead in the meet.
Skiing: Marie Grevsgaard, Junior, Geilo, Norway
Grevsgaard won both the 5K freestyle and 10K classic at the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, as she has now won three of the four races in NCAA west competition this winter. She won both in convincing fashion, winning the 5K by 24 seconds and the 10K by some 54 seconds. Her efforts helped CU increase its lead in MSU meet.
