Skiers Win at Montana State Invitational

January 07, 2007 | Skiing

BOZEMAN, Mont.  – The University of Colorado ski team's alpine squad got off to a fantastic start as one half of the defending NCAA Champion team here on Sunday morning, winning the alpine segment of the Montana State University Invitational at the Big Sky Ski Resort.  The Nordic portion of the meet will take place Jan. 19-20.
The weekend got off to a rocky start for all teams, as Saturday's giant slalom races were cancelled due to extremely windy conditions and poor visibility.  However the day off didn't keep the Buffaloes off the podium as junior Lucie Zikova won the women's slalom and newcomer Drew Roberts won the men's slalom.

Colorado won with a team total of 152.5 on the day, with the men's team contributing a score of 80.5, first place on their side, and the women putting up a 72, good for second in the women's results. Denver was second overall with 129 points, with Nevada in third at 120.

“I am very happy, it is a good way to start,” said CU head coach Richard Rokos.  “We can build on it and having three top scorers right away and a lot of top 10 finishes gives us confidence and peace of mind for the season.  Even with one race we collected a pretty solid lead.”
Zikova, who finished first or second in 10 of her 12 races in 2006, won in a total of 1:29.15 in her two runs.  Her first run of 44.28 was the best run of the day on the women's side.  Sophomore Lisa Perricone was seventh in 1:31.69, with Rachel Roosevelt coming in 16th at 1:33.42.  Senior Kristin Taylor was 19th and freshman Leslie Fox was 25th,
“Lucie skied well both today and in the FIS event on Friday,” said Rokos.  “Lisa was seventh today. She didn't have too good of a first run but she redeemed herself on the second run so she took seventh.”
In men's slalom, a pair of Colorado freshman made visits to the podium in their first collegiate meet.  Drew Roberts took first with a time of 1:26.77, while classmate Stefan Hughes was second in 1:26.84.  It was Hughes with the fastest run of the day, skiing to a 40.89 in his first run.
Classmate Arman Serebrakian also made the top 10, tying for ninth with Don Brockett of Montana State, both checking in with a time of 1:29.15.  Sophomore Tony Cesolini was 12th (1:29.56), followed by Miles Cooke in 21st (1:31.37) and Josh Bryan in 35th (1:42.02).
The Buffaloes will return to action next weekend when they travel to Utah for the University of Utah Invitational on Jan. 12-14.
