Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Kansas
October 19, 2007 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped their second straight conference match 2-0 to the University of Kansas Jayhawks here Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Buffs fall to 7-5-3 overall and 3-3-0 in Big 12 play while the Jayhawks improve to 4-9-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the Big 12.
"We certainly can't afford to lose anymore games in conference play," said head coach Bill Hempen. "We have one more at home and then three straight on the road, and that's it. We usually have a little trouble on the road, so we just have to step up now."
Kansas turned on the pressure in the 35th minute as Jayhawk forward Kim Boyer put a ball past Colorado goalkeeper Kara Linder and rolled toward the goal. Junior Michelle Wenino sprinted from outside the box and slid in to clear the ball and record the team save while keeping another KU player from getting a shot off.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half, with the Buffs outshooting the Jayhawks four to three.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, Kansas would take advantage of a Colorado defensive miscommunication as Monica Dolinsky got behind a loose ball in the middle of the box and tucked it away past the Buffs' second half keeper, Kirstin Radlinski for the 1-0 lead.
Kansas would strike again when Kim Boyer intercepted a pass back to the keeper and beat Radlinski one-on-one, knocking the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
"Second half we couldn't get a hold of the ball with any consistency," said Hempen. "Kansas is better than their record shows, and their back was against the wall. They played well today."
Despite outshooting the Jayhawks 13 to six in the second half, the Buffs were unable to find the back of the net and dropped their second-straight contest in league play. Sophomore Nikki Marshall and freshman Mel Hicks led Colorado with three shots each.
The Buffs will wrap up the weekend and celebrate senior day, honoring Brittany Dornseif and Allison Kidd on Sunday, Oct. 21 against the University of Missouri Tigers at 1 p.m. at Prentup Field. Admission and parking are free.
