Soccer Falls Short on Senior Day

October 21, 2007 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped a physical 2-0 battle to the No. 16 University of Missouri Tigers on senior day here Sunday.

"I told the kids today that I have never wanted to win more for a team than I wanted to today," said head coach Bill Hempen. "It's hard to go forward after fighting as hard as we did today. Missouri is a good team and they were able to take advantage. We brought everything we had, but sometimes that isn't enough."

Both teams got off to a quick and aggressive start as each got a shot off in the first 50 seconds of the game. Colorado's Nikki Marshall sprinted through the Tiger defense just 49 seconds in to the match but her shot went just wide of the goal.

Missouri got on the board on a corner kick in the 12th minute. Katya Hessel served a ball into the box and Kat Tarr extended in the air and headed it in the upper left 90 of the goal.

The Buffs nearly scored in the 34th minute when freshman Kaylee Boryla took a ball down the left sideline and played it in the middle to Marshall. Marshall one-timed a shot toward the upper left corner of the goal that just barely missed high.

The first half proved to be a physical one as Missouri committed 14 fouls to Colorado's five. The tigers also outshot the Buffaloes seven to five.

Junior Alex Cousins had a close opportunity to get the Buffs on the board in the 81st minute of the game when she was unmarked in the center of the field and sent a high ball on frame toward the goal. Tiger goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore was able to get a hand on it and push the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick.

"We came out with a lot of intensity and worked really hard," said junior defender Michelle Wenino. "It's just frustrating when we are not getting the ball into the back of the net."

Missouri would strike again just four minutes later when Mo Redmond cleared a ball up the field that skipped past the Colorado defense to teammate Kristin Andrighetto. Andrighetto sprinted toward the goal and nailed a left-footed shot in the air past a diving Radlinski for the 2-0 lead over Colorado.

Colorado outshot Missouri seven to four in the second half and edged the Tigers 12 shots to 11 on the game. Missouri would finish the match with 22 fouls to the Buffs' 16. Marshall led CU with three shots and Cousins was behind the lone shot on goal for the Buffaloes.

With the loss, Colorado drops their third straight conference game and falls to 7-6-3, 3-4-0 Big 12, while Missouri improves to 11-4-0, 5-2-0 Big 12.

"This was a tough loss for our team," said Marshall. "We needed to win this game. We have to start playing with more passion and for each other. We have to finish out conference play strong and get in to the Big 12 Tournament."

"We need to get it together quickly before going on the road as we finish out conference play," said Hempen. "We have got to keep fighting, because it's not going to be any easier the rest of the way. There are a lot of good teams out there. Our conference is underrated as a whole."

Next week, Colorado will travel to Oklahoma for the weekend to take on the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. and the Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon.
