Harkrader and Almagno Named CU Athletes of the Week

BOULDER-- Cross country runner Bradley Harkrader (junior) and women's tennis player Victoria Almagno (senior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of October 15-21. This is the first CU athlete of the week award of the year and career for Harkrader and Almagno.
Harkrader, a Westminster, Colo. (Thornton) native, led the CU 'B' team to a first-place team finish at the Air Force Invite. Harkrader was the first racer to cross the finish in 25:07.82 over the 8k course. Harkrader's first place finish was just over twenty seconds faster then the second place finisher, Rich Adam. This marked Harkrader's first career victory.
Almagno, an Englewood, Colo., (Cherry Creek) native, won three of four singles matches and teamed with doubles teammate Christian Pheil for another pair of wins at the New Mexico Invitational. Almagno reached the main draw quarterfinals and won both her consolation back draw matches. In doubles, Almagno and Pheil lost in the Doubles B final. Almagno is one of four seniors on the CU team and has won a team-best nine singles matches.
Others nominated for this week's award were Tyson DeVree (football), Michael Baird (men's gofl), Emily Hanenburg (cross country) and Lauren Schaefer (volleyball).
Football: Tyson DeVree, Senior, Hudsonville, Mich.
DeVree caught a career-high seven passes for 90 yards, also a career-best, with a touchdown in CU's 19-14 loss to No. 15 Kansas. Five of his receptions earned first downs, four on third down plays.
Men's Golf: Michael Baird, Senior, Castle Rock, Colo.
Baird tied for 15th (as did sophomore Luke Symons) to lead the Buffaloes to ninth place finish in The Prestige at PGA West, finishing with a 217 total, 1-over par, for 54 holes on the 7,156-yard, par-72 Greg Norman Course at PGA West. His first round 69 was one of the few rounds in the 60s in the tournament.
Cross Country: Emily Hanenburg, Sophomore, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hanenburg led the CU 'B' team to a first-place finish at the Air Force Invite. She was the fourth to cross the finish, but was the first Buff to cross the line in 23:26.32. This was Hanenburg's highest finish of her collegiate career.
Volleyball: Lauren Schaefer, Junior, Mountain View, Calif.
Schaefer led the Buffs with a .438 attack percentage last week. She recorded a .355 against Iowa State and hit .515 vs. Baylor. Schaefer recorded 32 kills and averaged 3.20 per game. She also led CU in blocking on the week with 12 (one solo and 11 assists), all versus ISU. CU set records in blocks (26) and block assists (42) that night.
