BOULDER ? Lauren Schaefer led the Buffs with13 kills and 25 attacks and hit a team-high .320, but the University of Colorado volleyball team couldn't manage a victory over the No.5 University of Texas Longhorns on Saturday, October 27 at the Coors Events Center. Game scores were 27-30, 19-30, and 28-30.
Colorado put up a fight in the first game, keeping the score tied five times. However, the Longhorns succeeded in grabbing the lead in the beginning of the second game and holding off the Buffs for the remainder of the game and ended up outscoring CU 30-19. The third game was a constant battle, with the score tied 17 times, but eventually Texas overcame CU 30-28.
“I think in the second game we just gave them some plays,” said head coach Pi'i Aiu. ”You know you can't give Texas anything. They're going to earn some plays too for sure, but you have to make them earn them.”
Alex Buth also hit double-digits with 11 kills and a team-high 29 attacks, good for .276.
“(Buth and Schaefer) are attacking really aggressively right now; they are just playing well right now,'” Aiu said. “Hopefully we can pick it up in a few other areas and we'll turn this thing around.”
Callie Webster and Ashley Venhorst tied for a team-high eight digs. Schylur Edelman recorded eight kills and 20 attacks.
The loss today adds to the longest losing streak in CU volleyball history and brings Colorado to 0-13 in the Big 12 and 5-16 overall.
“My general impressions are that we played pretty well,” Aiu said. “I think when we got into tight points we didn't play quite as well, I don't think we can be too excited about losing in three. We can take some good things away from this match.”
Colorado was no match for Texas when it came to blocking; the Longhorns dealt 13.0 to CU's 6.0.
Texas dished out 55 kills on 112 attacks, hitting .348. Colorado recorded 48 kills on 129 attacks, hitting .194.
Texas dished out 45 total digs during the match and Colorado came close with 37.
Colorado will hit the road to take on Iowa State on Wednesday, October 31 at 6 p.m. in Ames, Iowa. CU fell to ISU earlier in five games at the CECC.
