Women's Golf Finishes 12th at Hawaii Invite

Honolulu, Hawaii ? The University of Colorado women's golf team stayed put in 12th place in their final tournament of the fall season here Tuesday, shooting the team's tournament best score of 313 in the last round at the Kent Youel Invitational.

UCLA won the tournament with a combined tournament score of 881, despite shooting their team high score of 297 in the final cycle of play. UCLA was followed by USC (885), California (896), Oregon State (917) and San Jose State (918).

Sophomore Dominique Pytlewski led the Buffaloes, finishing in a tie for eighth at six strokes over par (222). She shot a two-over 74 on the final day, which was her second best score of the tournament. All three of Pytlewski's scores (72,76,74) were team lows.

“Domi played solid,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “Julie played better in the third round as well. We were working real hard and trying to battle with the conditions, but we just couldn't get anything going this week.”

“If you were watching me, it didn't look too pretty,” said Pytlewski. “But I never got upset with my results because I was making my shots and that helped me maintain a pretty positive attitude about everything. Yesterday was draining and tiring because I was recovering from an illness, but I stuck in there and was putting well. I didn't hit too great, but my short game was able to make up for it.”

Pytlewski was followed by senior Lindsay Senger, who finished tied for 50th place with a three-round total of 237, dropping two spots from yesterday. Sophomore Julie Kim followed just three strokes behind Senger in 60th place, carding a 240 in her final round.

Freshman Stephanie Simich was close behind Kim, shooting 241 in the tournament, with a final round 81, which left her tied for 65th place.

Junior Cierra Ko rounded out the Colorado scorecard shooting her tournament best score of 85 in the final round for a combined score of 262.

Tiffany Joh and Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA shot the best individual scores out of the tournament's 102 golfers, with a final score that was a one-over par 217.

“We weren't happy with the finish, but we're not discouraged either,” said Kelly. “Everyone was three or four shots away from playing pretty good golf. Stephanie hit the ball really well, probably the best she has all semester, and so did Senger. We just had some putting problems and we're going to have to work harder on that aspect of our game.”

The Buffaloes will now break for the semester, before coming back on Friday, Feb. 22 to re-commence play in the University of Florida Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

“We need to build confidence with our putters,” said Kelly. “It's nice to have the off season to do that and it gives us time to look back over the season and see what we were doing well and what areas that we need to improve on. Overall, it was a pretty decent fall.”
