Women's Golf tied for 11th in Florida

GAINSVILLE, Fla. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team teed off its first tournament of the spring here Friday afternoon in a tie for 11th place after the first round of the University of Florida Lady Gator Invitational. No. 5 Florida leads the tournament with a first round, even par score of 280, while the Buffaloes shot 312.
“Overall everyone is disappointed,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “We are a little rusty and I think that it showed. There were some good things that happened out there today as everyone hit their share of quality shots, but we just haven't had the chance to play and practice as much as we would like lately to get cleaned up.”
Freshman Stephanie Simich had a solid first round, with a pair of birdies, cruising to a three-over par 73 on the day as CU's top finisher. This marked the first time that the Mississauga, Ontario native has led the Buffs after the first day of competition, as she sits in a tie for 15th place overall.
“Steph's play was really the bright spot for us today,” said Kelly. “Brent (Franklin) and I talked to her after the fall season and we came up with some specific things that she needed to work on both with her swing and mentally. She's done a great job so far and I'm very proud of the improvement that she's made.”
“I was a little nervous on the first couple of holes,” said Simich. “But overall I really just tried to keep a positive attitude and work on what coach told me to work on and I got through the day pretty well.”
Simich was followed by senior Lindsay Senger and sophomore Julie Kim, who are currently in a tie for 49th place. Kim carded a solid 38 on the front nine, but ran into some set-backs on the back, whileSenger stayed fairly consistent throughout the round, and the pair posted a nine-over 79.
Sophomores Dominique Pytlewski and Christine Kim both posted a first round total of 81 and are tied for 66th overall.

The second round of the Lady Gator Invitational will get underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The Buffaloes will tee off in the morning beginning with Christine Kim at 9:42 a.m.
“You'd always like to come out and fire a little bit better, but it was just a tough day for us,” said Kelly. “Everyone is disappointed and they're out here practicing after the round and hopefully we'll find a way to do thing better tomorrow.”
