Soccer Blanks Cyclones 1-0
October 07, 2007 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team shut out Iowa State 1-0 to wrap up a successful Big 12 home weekend and hand the Cyclones their first loss in the last six matches here Sunday.
"I told them that sometimes you win with a high-energy game and sometimes you have to grind it out," said head coach Bill Hempen. "Today was one of those games that we had to grind out, and we're happy to get the win."
The Buffs (6-3-3, 2-1-0 Big 12) took and early 1-0 lead on a Nikki Marshall goal in the 20th minute. Marshall carried the ball from the midfield and took it to goal, beating the Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason to the left for her sixth goal on the season.
Marshall's goal was her sixth on the year and third in the last two games. Marshall's six points on the weekend move her up to fourth on the career points list with 44, tied with former Buff Jen Thais.
"Today's win was big for us," said Marshall. "Before today they were undefeated in the conference but we came out strong and we're finally finding the back of the net."
Colorado outshot the Cyclones 12 to three and Buffalo goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski only had to rack up one save in the game.
"We weren't as sharp as we have been, but luckily we were sharp enough to come out on top," said Hempen.
With the win the Buffs now have seven shutouts on the season and improve to 10-2 against Iowa State and have preserved the perfect 7-0 record against the Cyclones in Boulder.
"We're not giving up a lot of goals," said Hempen. "The defense has stepped up to the challenge all year long and they did it again today."
Colorado will now hit the road and travel to Texas next weekend where they face Baylor on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in Waco. The Buffs will then head to College Station on Sunday, Oct. 14 to take on the Texas A&M Aggies at noon.
