March 14, 2007 | Tennis

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team recorded its biggest upset in school history knocking off No. 12 William & Mary, 4-3 behind a pair of clutch singles victories Wednesday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts.

Junior Gleisy Torres Torres and sophomore Monica Milewski erased a 3-2 team deficit rallying with clutch play in their decisive third sets helping the Buffaloes (10-3) stage their second upset over a top-15 team in 10 days (CU upset No. 14, Baylor, 5-2 back on March 4).

Trailing by a set, Torres Torres rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the second stanza at the No. 5 slot storming back for a 7-5 winner. She subsequently took the third set, 7-5 defeating Magdalena Bresson setting up Milewski's third set heroics.

Just like Torres Torres, Milewski, rallied from a set down forcing the final set against one of the nation's top ranked players in Megan Moulton-Levy. Moulton-Levy, No. 5 in the Fila/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings took the upper hand on Milewski jumping out to a 3-0 and 4-1 advantage in the third set.

“I don't think I have ever fought that hard in my life for a match,” said Milewski, who won her eighth-straight singles match. “I had to think that I wasn't tired and that I had energy. After a point was done, I was ready to collapse, but then I would get up to the line and say, ?ok, you're not tired, keep fighting, get one more ball in the court.'”

Helping the CU singles tally was sophomore Franziska Jendrian, who registered the another team point at No. 4. Jendrian defeated Klaudyna Kasztelaniec in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 for her four straight victory.

By winning three of the six singles positions, W&M countered winning three of their own.

The Tribe had won a school-best 11-straight matches to open the dual season, also lost the doubles point for the first time this spring.

The Tribe's No. 1 ranked team of Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic defended their ranking with an 8-2 winner over Torres Torres and Camila Belassi for a quick 1-0 advantage. The Buffs' countered at No. 2 behind Jendrian and Milewski defeating Magdalena Bresson/Ragini Acharya, 8-4 for their fourth straight victory, evening the doubles portion at one.

In the decisive third match, CU's Melisa Esposito and Martina Sedivec teamed up for an exciting 8-6 triumph over Lauren Sabacinski/Klaudyna Kasztelaniec. Esposito/Sedivec also remained unbeaten as a pair improving their dual record to 6-0.

“The girls did a terrific job maintaining the momentum and just believing,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “William & Mary is a great team; they're an NCAA Tournament team. I think it shows the heart of our team, what we're made and how much their willing to be out there for themselves as well as more importantly each other. It's a great win, but we still have matches to come.”

CU is ranked No. 29 nationally has also won fourth straight, and seven of its last eight matches.

The Buffaloes are idle until March 22 when they travel to Texas A&M to begin a seven-match road trip over four states (Texas, California, Colorado, Kansas). The next home match is April 21 (Oklahoma) and April 22 (Nebraska) to close out the conference and regular season.
