Golfers Finish Eighth At Shocker Classic
April 03, 2007 | Men's Golf
Texas-Arlington won with an 891 score, defeating NAIA No. 2 Oklahoma City by two strokes.
Wind gusts of 30 miles per hour again plagued the tournament on Tuesday, after players were forced to deal with similar ones of 29 to 40 miles per hour in Monday's second round. The average score for the final round was 78.8, as just two players equaled par and just nine others shot better than a 4-over 75 on the 6,814-yard, par-71 Wichita Country Club course layout.
More important that CU's finish was the fact that Blake Moore was doing better Tuesday morning after a brief 3-hour hospital stay Monday afternoon, as he had checked in after withdrawing after 11 holes in Monday's second round.
Even though CU had a sixth golfer on the trip, freshman Luke Symons, he was designated as an individual player whose score would not count toward the Buff total. That could not change after play started Monday morning.
Junior Patrick Grady paced the Buffaloes as he tied for 10th individually, his best finish of the spring. He turned in a 78 in the final round for a 223-total, or 10-over par.
Junior Michael Baird posted a 6-over 77, to close with a 225 total to tie for 20th place. Senior Ryan Anderson recorded CU's best third round score, a 3-over 74 for a 229 to tie for 36th. Junior Derek Tolan closed with a 78 for a 231, tying for 43rd, while Symons shot an 81 for a 236 score, tying for 54th.
“Today was a tough day for us, as unfortunately we lost to some teams that we needed to beat,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “It doesn't matter that we were one short and playing without one of our top three guys, the (NCAA selection) committee seldom takes that into consideration. It's just the way it is, and you know that going in, so we'll deal with it. But the good news is that we have a chance to see them again at the Big 12 Championships in three weeks.”
“Blake wasn't feeling great, but he thought he could play,” Edwards added. “As the day progressed it was obvious he couldn't go on and probably should have quit earlier. It's hard to imagine playing 29 holes knowing what he had to be going through, but he obviously was trying to gut it out for the team. While that's commendable, his health comes first and am glad he finally relayed to me had to quit.”
Texas-Arlington's Bobby Massa claimed medalist honors, as he needed only a final round 75 to win with a 219 score, or 6-over par.
The Buffaloes have one competition left prior to the Big 12 Conference Championships in three weeks, the third annual Fowler Cup, a one-day set of matches between current team members and alumni. This year's event is set for Friday, April 13 at The Ridge in Castle Pines.
