Tennis Rallies In Singles Play, Defeats Denver, 4-3

April 07, 2007 | Tennis

DENVER ? Sophomores Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian each rallied from a set down in their respective singles matches, then stormed back to lift the University of Colorado tennis team to a 4-3 road victory over the Denver Pioneers, late Friday night at the Colorado Athletic Club.

Trailing 1-0 after the losing the doubles point, the No. 30 nationally ranked Buffaloes regrouped in singles play winning four of six slots for the narrow team victory. The win improves CU's overall record to 12-6, while the Pioneers drop to 10-7.

In addition to Milewski and Jendrian securing singles wins, junior Gleisy Torres Torres and freshman Melisa Esposito each took their respective matches in straight sets.

Torres Torres won her third straight match and her 22nd of the season sweeping Kyla Iwinski, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, while Esposito won her 13th defeating Rachel Sackmaster 6-2, 7-6(4) at No. 5.

Milewski, who is the lone nationally ranked singles player on the CU roster at No. 42, lost the first set 6-3 to Annette Aksdal. However, Milewski rallied and fought through a tough 6-4, 7-5 victory at the top singles slot. Milewski's victory was her 22nd of the season and fourth of the year after dropping the first set.

Jendrian's match was a little easier at No. 3 after dropping the first set against 6-4 to Julia Bauregger. Jendrian breezed through her next two sets 6-1, 6-2 for her 19th victory of the year.

The win continues CU's dominance over its in-state rival to a 27-4 advantage dating back to 1975.

The Buffaloes close their seven-match road trip next weekend at Kansas State (April 14) and Kansas (April 15) before ending the regular season portion of the schedule with Oklahoma and Nebraska on April 21 and April 22, respectively.
