Soccer Plays To Scoreless Tie With BYU
September 08, 2007 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team wrapped up their home-opening weekend with a 0-0 tie with Brigham Young Saturday afternoon. With the draw, the Buffs now post a record of 2-0-2 while the Cougars are 2-0-1.
"We knew this team was going to be good," Colorado head coach Bill Hempen said. "Both teams had quality chances. There was good defending on each end from start to finish and neither team could catch a break."
The Buffaloes got off to a slow offensive start in the first half, but turned on the switch in the 29th minute when sophomore Nikki Marshall nearly scored on a one-on-one against BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury, who managed to slide in and knock the ball loose. Marshall then got another foot on the ball, but it was blocked and cleared up the field by a Cougar defender.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half with the Buffs putting three out of four shots on goal. The Cougars had nine shots, three of which were on goal.
BYU nearly got on the board in the 47th minute as Kelsea Kakadelas was on the receiving end of a ball placed in the middle of the Colorado box. Kakadelas sent a shot through the defense but was denied by a diving Kirstin Radlinski.
Colorado started to pressure the Cougar defense in the 75th minute when Marshall took a ball across the top of the box and fired a shot that was barely saved off of the BYU goalkeeper's body. The Buffs struck again when freshman Michaela DeJesus sent and long ball from the right corner into the box. Senior Allison Kidd was on the receiving end and headed the ball just high of the Cougar goal.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the game was sent into overtime. This marks the second time in as many games that BYU has been forced into overtime as they beat Kansas on Thursday 1-0 in the second overtime period.
The Buffs had another close opportunity in the 95th minute when Marshall worked her way through the Cougar defense on a corner kick, but her shot was blocked and cleared out. Under a minute later Marshall was behind another chance and sent a ball past the keeper, but another BYU defender recorded a team save after blocking the ball inside the left post.
"We were connecting and making chances happen," said Kidd. "But the last step is knocking the ball in the net and we couldn't do it. Sometimes you have games when it's harder than others to find the back of the net but we're starting to come together."
After yet another scoreless 10 minutes, the teams went into the second overtime period. BYU nearly got the golden goal when Kakadelas sent a ball into the box and Katie Larkin sent a header at the CU net. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced out of play.
The match ended with BYU out-shooting Colorado 21-10, as the Buffaloes tied for the second time in three matches. Radlinski finished with seven saves on the day and recorded her second shutout this season. Marshall led the Buffs offensively with four shots, three coming on goal.
"We grew as a team today," Hempen said. "We are just trying to get some kids minutes and chances to play. Everyone knows one another now and how each person plays, so we're looking to be a better team the next time we play."
Colorado will now travel to take on No. 11 Virginia on Friday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. MDT, followed by New Mexico on Sunday, Sept. 16 in Charlottesville.
