Soccer Falls 4-0 to No. 10 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team could not find the back of the net for the second straight game as they dropped 4-0 to No. 10 Virginia in Charlottesville Friday night, handing CU their first loss of the season.

Virginia (3-1-1) got on the board first in the seventh minute of the game. Senior forward Shannon Foley took a pass from Sarah Senty and sent a floating ball that went just inside the far post and past the hands of Colorado goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski.

"Some days we're good enough, and some days we're not," said head coach Bill Hempen. "Today we weren't. But we kept going and never quit. We had the chance to tie it early on but we missed a wide open goal and that could have changed things. We missed our opportunity to get back even."

Virginia took the 1-0 lead into the half, with both teams generating minimal offensive production. The Cavaliers finished the half with three shots to the Buffs' two. Both teams were evenly physical with each other as CU committed seven fouls and Virginia chalked up eight.

Junior transfer Genna Gorman made her first appearance for Colorado this season when she entered the game in the 20th minute of the game, replacing Buff forward Nikki Marshall.
Foley would strike again for the Cavaliers just under six minutes into the second half. This time, Foley took a Sinead Farrelly pass at the top of the 18 and one-timed it into the net, recording her fourth goal of the season and second in the match.

Virginia kept on the pressure in the Colorado box and just four minutes later junior defender Becky Sauerbrunn, along with the help of teammate Nikki Krzysik, capitalized on a scramble in the box in front of the Colorado goal and Sauerbrunn tapped in the ball past Radlinski for the 3-0 lead in the 54th minute of the game.

The Buffaloes (2-1-2) nearly scored in the 59th minute when senior Allison Kidd took a shot that went beyond the stretched hands of Virginia goalkeeper Chantel Jones but it hit the post and was sent back into play by the Cavalier defense.

"They (Virginia) were a very good team," said junior midfielder Alex Cousins. "I think the defense played well, but we had a tough time stringing passes together and we couldn't generate a lot of offense. They're defenders were right up on us. It's all about timing and movement and tonight we didn't have it."

Virginia would not let up offensively and got through the Colorado defense once again when Kelly Quinn received a through ball in the box from Foley and Quinn chipped the ball right over Radlinski's head, putting the Cavaliers up 4-0.

CU's Nikki Marshall tried to put a dent into Virginia's lead when she hit a shot in the 73rd minute that was denied by Cavalier keeper, Jones, to keep Colorado scoreless in the match.
Virginia finished the match out-shooting the Buffaloes 12 to five. The Cavaliers put eight shots on goal while the Buffs only managed two.

"Virginia is good," said Hempen. "We had some bad clearances and we were unable to hold onto the ball. They were more aggressively defensively; they were elite. It shows us that we have a long way to go."

Colorado will be back in action Sunday morning at 9 a.m. MDT when they take on the New Mexico Lobos in the second day of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. The Buffs will return to Boulder next week where they will prepare for the Colorado Soccer Classic and play host to Denver, Drake and No. 1 ranked Stanford.
