Soccer Ties UNM 0-0 in Double-Overtime

September 16, 2007 | Soccer

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team went scoreless for the third straight game and played to a 0-0 tie with New Mexico here Sunday afternoon.

"It was a very frustrating game," said head coach Bill Hempen. "We played pretty good but we kept trying to set up for highlight-reel goals. They were resilient and didn't give us a whole lot of looks and we came away with no goals and nothing to show for in ACC country."

Colorado (2-1-3) wrapped up the first half, trailing the Lobos in shots seven to four. The Buffs managed to put two of the four on goal as CU sophomore Nikki Marshall and freshman Mel Hicks both attempted to score off of headers, but UNM's goalkeeper Shannon Adragna was able to get behind both of them.

The second half got underway with freshman Michaela DeJesus striking two shots early on, with both of them missing just wide of the net. The Buffs would wait 33 minutes before they had an opportunity to take another shot as Marshall struck again in the 74th minute, but was unable to put the ball on goal as her shot traveled wide right.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, the Buffs and Lobos were forced into overtime. This marks the third time this year that Colorado has been sent to overtime, with each game ending in a tie.

New Mexico (3-2-1) got the first chance in overtime when Anna Neu headed a ball toward the CU goal but was denied but Buffalo keeper Kirstin Radlinski. The Lobos continued to pressure the Colorado defense, this time with Kaci Paetz sending a shot towards Radlinski, but was unable to break through as Radlinski picked up her fourth save in the game.

Despite being unable to record a shot in the first overtime period, the Buffaloes managed to shut down the Lobos and push the game into a second overtime for another chance to settle the match.

Colorado senior Allison Kidd would take the first shot for the Buffs in overtime, but the ball would travel just high of the goal. The Buffs nearly had another chance to end the game when Buffalo defender Michelle Wenino took a shot off freshman Natalie Weeks' corner kick, but the shot went wide right and out of play.

For the third straight game, Colorado would finish scoreless and play to their second scoreless tie this season. This marks the first time in program history that the Buffs have tied three times in the first five games as well as the first time ever in a season that they have finished with two scoreless draws.

CU finished with 10 shots, two on goal, while UNM took 13 shots. Radlinski ended the game with four saves and posted her 10th career shutout, keeping her opponents scoreless for the third time this season. Offensively, Marshall led Colorado with three shots, one of which came on goal. DeJesus followed with two shots.

"Today we were pretty good defensively," said Hempen. "They out-shot us on set pieces and let it fly from anywhere. We played pretty good, we just didn't finish. We were a pass away from scoring, but we never got that last pass and never got the shot off."

Two Buffs recorded their first career starts in a Colorado uniform as junior transfer Genna Gorman and freshman Cortney Charlesworth started at forward and defender, respectively.

The Buffs will now return home and prepare for the sixth annual Colorado Soccer Classic as they play host to Denver, Drake and No. 1 Stanford. Colorado will face Stanford on Friday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. and Drake on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
