Soccer Ties ISU 0-0 in Double Overtime

October 19, 2008 | Soccer

AMES, Iowa. - Despite offensively dominating a 110-minute battle with the Iowa State Cyclones, the 15th-ranked University of Colorado women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie here Sunday afternoon.

With the tie, Colorado is now 12-2-3 overall and 6-1-2 in Big 12 play, while Iowa State is 5-9-2 overall and 0-5-2 in the Big 12.

"After we got over the fact that we didn't win the game, I realized that we can't be disappointed after the effort that our team gave today," said head coach Bill Hempen.  "The execution may not have been as sharp, but that didn't take away from the effort.  The Big 12 is what it is.  Every team wants to win and comes into every game to compete.  We just didn't do the one thing that we needed to do to win the game which was score goals."

The Buffaloes and Cyclones played to a scoreless first half with CU outshooting ISU 12 to five.  Both Colorado's goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski and Iowa State's keeper Ann Gleason pulled in three saves apiece.

Colorado came out in the second half and dominated offensively once again, but the Buffaloes were unable to find the back of the net after 90 minutes.  CU forced Gleason to make 11 saves in the second half and the Buffs finished regulation play with 32 shots to the Cyclones' nine.

"The effort was there and we played hard as a team but we couldn't put anything together to get a legitimate shot on goal," said Radlinski.  "Every attack seemed like we were working so hard and as soon as we got close to the goal it was like we were exhausted and just had a hard time finishing.  It was definitely frustrating."

The two teams were tied after 90 minutes of play, forcing the game into overtime.  In the first overtime period, the Buffs recorded the only shot, taken by freshman midfielder Kelly Butler less than three minutes into extra time, but Gleason was there to make the save and preserve the tie.

The second 10-minute period saw more action than the first as CU recorded four shots to ISU's one, but again they were unable to finish and the game would end in a 0-0 tie.

"There were a couple of really good saves made by their goalkeeper that played in the second half," said Hempen.  "She made two really great saves and was there when she needed to be and wouldn't really give us a chance.  She was great and they competed well against us."

Colorado was led offensively by junior forward Nikki Marshall who recorded a game-high eight shots in the match, three of which were on goal.  Radlinski picked up a season-high six saves in the game, recording her fourth shutout of the season.

"The defense did a great job at preserving the shutout," said Radlinski.  "There were times when there was a lot of action around the goal with corner kicks, one-on-ones and free kicks and we were either able to clear the ball out or I was able to make the save.  We worked hard and the defense did a great job at holding them off and not giving them anything to capitalize on."

The Buffs will head back to Iowa next week to face the Drake Bulldogs at 6 p.m on Friday, Oct. 24 in Des Moines.  CU will wrap up the weekend, as well as the regular season against No. 6 Texas A&M on Sunday, Oct. 26 as they celebrate Senior Day at 1 p.m. in Boulder.  As always, admission and parking at all CU games is free.

"Again, our team felt like they lost the game today, but I had to make sure they understood that they didn't lose the game; they weren't outplayed or outmatched," said Hempen.  "We'll be alright.  This is the time of the year when we have to come together a little bit more and get our spirits back up."
