Buffs Fall to Rams in Home Opener

Second Ranked Huskers Top Buffs

October 04, 2008 | Volleyball

LINCOLN, Neb. ? The University of Colorado volleyball team fell to second ranked Nebraska 19-25, 15-25, 24-26 on Saturday afternoon.

The Buffs battled with Nebraska and gave the Huskers a good run in the third set. The Buffs fought off three match points after being down 24-21 to tie the set up at 24. The Huskers called a timeout and went on to take the next two points to win the match.

“I thought we did a nice job battling tonight which is something that we haven't done well in Big 12 matches this season,” head coach Pi'i Aiu said. “This is our best road match as far as how hard we battled, but we aren't quite where we need to be. I think we are getting there. We need to be patient; hopefully we will get there by midseason. We are doing nice things now but we are still making the same mistakes.”

Junior outside hitter Emilee Sisco led the Buffs for the second straight match with nine kills. Senior Alex Buth added seven. Senior Lauren Schaefer hit a team-high .308 with four kills on 13 errorless attacks.

CU hit .140 for the match while Nebraska hit .320. Junior Kaitlyn Burkett recorded 26 of CU's 27 assists in the effort.

The Buffs out-blocked Nebraska by recording 5.0 team blocks (one solo, eight assists) compared to NU's 4.0 (one solo, six assists). Sophomore Schylur Edelman and Buth each posted three blocks.

Senior Callie Webster picked up eight digs to lead CU.

The loss moves the Buffs to an 8-6 record and 2-3 in the Big 12. The Huskers are a perfect 14-0 (6-0 Big 12).

The Buffs will head home for a pair of contests at the Coors Events Center next week. They will entertain Texas Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 8 before hosting No. 3 Texas on Saturday, Oct. 11. CU will host Coats For Colorado at the Texas match. Fans who donate a new or gently used coat will receive $1 admission.
