Kyle and Jendrian Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors

October 07, 2008 | Cross Country, General, Tennis

BOULDER-- Cross country runner Jordan Kyle (junior), and tennis player Franziska Jendrian (senior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of September 30-October 5. This is the first honor for both athletes this year. Overall, it is Kyle's first award, and Jendrian's sixth, moving her out of a tie with current teammate Monica Milewski for the most career honors for a tennis player.

Kyle, a Fishers, Ind. (Hamilton Southeastern/Indiana) native placed second overall in the Rocky Mountain Shootout meet in Boulder.  Kyle ran the 8k course in a time of 25:20. Kyle ran with the top four for the entire race (teammate Chris Pannone and two Adams State runners), in only his first race at higher altitude.  He finished 16 seconds behind Aaron Brown (25:04) of Adams State.  Colorado captured their 18th consecutive title in a meet that also featured Air Force, Wyoming, Northern Colorado, NCAA Division II second-ranked Adams State, #5 Western State and several others.  Kyle transferred from the University of Indiana to CU this past June.

Jendrian, a Rodleban, Germany (Sportgymnasium Magdeburg) native won her singles draw, then teamed with Melisa Esposito to win the main doubles flight at the seven-team Air Force Invitational, Oct. 3 and 4. Jendrian captured the Silver Draw with three consecutive matches, her sixth straight victory of the fall season defeating a pair of Tulsa Golden Hurricane players in straight sets in the semifinal and final rounds, after receiving a first round bye.  In doubles along with Esposito the two were victorious in three more matches, including an upset of the top-seeded pair of Camila Belassi and Monica Milewski also of Colorado, 8-6. It was the pair's fourth straight win of the fall. Jendrian's five victories (3 singles, 2 doubles) moved her into 19th place on the all-time CU singles list (66 wins) and put her into fourth place on the all-time doubles list (63).

Others nominated for this week's award were Emily Hanenburg (women's cross country), Emily Childs (women's golf), and Kirstin Radlinski (soccer).

Women's Cross Country:  Emily Hanedburg, Junior, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Hanenburg led the Buffs varsity team for the first time in her career as she placed fifth overall at the Rocky Mountain Shootout and helped the women to their 10th straight RMS title.  She ran the 5.8k course in a time of 21:52. Hanenburg recorded a personal record on the course by over one minute (previous best was 23:02).

Women's Golf:  Emily Childs, Freshman, Alameda, Calif.

Childs has been CU's No. 1 golfer the entire season and has recorded two runner-up finishes and one seventh place finish in her first three tournaments.  Recently, in the CU Heather Farr Memorial, Childs recorded her second runner-up finish in three tournaments, finishing just three strokes behind the leader.  Childs, who posted a four-under 68 in round one, wrapped up the tournament with a third round score of 72 and a 210 total.  Childs currently leads all Buffalo golfers with a 70.89 average after nine rounds of competition and she has already set a new school record for most subpar rounds and most rounds in the 60s in a single season and most rounds in the 60s in a career, with a minimum of eight tournaments left to play in just her first year at CU.  Her low round to date is a 67 and her stroke in relation to par (SCRIP) is -13.

Soccer:  Kirstin Radlinski, Senior, Placentia, Calif.

Radlinski, despite dropping a 1-0 decision to Missouri on Friday, racked up five saves in the match, including a Penalty Kick in the 63rd minute of the game that could have given Missouri the 2-0 lead.  Two days later, Radlinski went out against Kansas, who has scored at least one goal in every one of its previous 11 contests, and shutout the Jayhawks for the first time this season, once again recording five saves, giving her 10 on the weekend.  Radlinski is currently ranked 19th in the nation with a 0.579 GAA and 79th with a .818 save percentage.  She is second in the Big 12 with a 0.58 GAA, having played 442 minutes more than the goalkeeper in first.
