November 11, 2008 | Football, General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Soccer
BOULDER-- Quarterback Cody Hawkins (sophomore) and keeper Kirstin Radlinski (senior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of November 3-9. This is the first career award of Hawkins, for Radlinski this marks her second award of the season, and the third of her career.
Hawkins, a Boise, Idaho (Bishop Kelly) native, was 20-29 passing the football for 226 yards and four touchdowns in the Buffs hard fought 28-24 win over Iowa State. His four touchdown passes marked a career high as did his single game rating of 180.0. All of Hawkins stats came in the second half as he relieved Tyler Hansen at halftime. Hawkins took only 43 snaps in the second half. He rallied the Buffs from 11 points down with 9:14 left in the game and completed the winning touchdown to Cody Crawford with 1:30 left in the game. Hawkins surpassed the 4,000-yard mark in career passing (4,165), just the sixth player in school history to do so, and his 34 career TD passes is now tied for third all-time with John Hessler (trailing only Joel Klatt 44 and Koy Detmer 40).
Radlinski, a Placentia, Calif. (El Dorado) native, led the Buffs in the 1-1 tie with Oklahoma State in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. At the end of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, Radlinski racked up a school-record 12 saves, breaking former keeper Jessica Keller's (2003-05) previous record of 11. As if that wasn't enough, Radlinski then made three saves on Oklahoma State penalty kicks, allowing Colorado to win the shoot-out and advance to the Championship game of the Big 12 Tournament. In the first round matchup against Nebraska, Radlinski shutout of the Huskers for 90 minutes and recorded six saves. She also made six saves in the heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Missouri in the Championship game of the tournament, giving her a total of 24 saves for the tournament.
Others nominated for this week's award were Camila Belassi (women's tennis) and Emily Childs (women's golf).
Women's Tennis: Camila Belassi, Junior, Paysand, Uruguay.
Belassi capped off three consecutive victories in as many days, defeating fellow CU teammate Franziska Jendrian in straight sets to win the Singles A Consolation Final on the last day of the San Diego State University Fall Classic. Belassi fell in her main draw singles match on Friday, however, rallied back to win three straight matches without a dropping a set for her 10th win of the fall season. The junior from Paysand, Uruguay defeated Jendrian 6-3, 6-0, Sunday afternoon. Belassi ends the fall season having won six of her last eight singles matches.
Women's Golf: Emily Childs, Freshman, Alameda, Calif.
Childs led the way for Colorado at the Texas State Challenge at Wolfdancer, shooting 76-74-77:227, helping CU close out the fall portion of the season with its first tournament win this year. Childs was fourth overall after two rounds, but dropped back two places in the standings after the final 18 holes to finish sixth individually. Childs, just six strokes out of the lead, managed to record her third top-10 finish of the season.
