Charles Places 7th at USATF Championship

BOSTON?University of Colorado long jumper Hugh Charles placed seventh at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston on Sunday.

Charles' mark of 24 feet and 5.75 inches earned him the seventh place finish in the men's long jump finals. The mark was his first jump of the day. Trevell Quinley of Nike won the event with a leap of 25-08.00.

“Hugh did great,” assistant track coach Lindsey Malone said. “Competing at the USATF Championships is a great accomplishment and I am very proud of Hugh. Now we need to focus on the upcoming Big 12 Championships in less than one week.”

Charles, who came into the meet with the seventh best mark in the entered field (25--3.25), was the sole athlete competing for the University of Colorado. The senior track and field athlete was the only athlete representing a college or university in the field of 17 athletes in the long jump.

The top three finishers in the long jump event were to advance to the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain on March 7-9.

The Colorado track and field team will be back in action Feb. 29-March 1 in Lincoln, Neb., as they compete in the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Nebraska.
