Golfers Currently Ninth in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO ? The University of Colorado women's golf team got off to a slow start, but turned things around and jumped two places in the standings as they sit in ninth place at the NCAA Western Regional Preview, hosted by Sacramento State on Monday.

No. 12-ranked Denver (578) leads the pack by a comfortable 12 strokes over unranked Washington State (590).  Oregon (592), UNLV (597), Fresno State (598), and UC Irvine (598) round out the top-five.  Fresh off of 54-holes of golf in Arizona over the weekend, the Buffs really rallied here in the second round, improving by 11 strokes, carding a first day 307-296-603.

“Stephanie (Simich) and Lindsay (Senger) really made great come-backs in the second round and I was very proud of them for that,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “Domi played a solid first round, but had trouble in the second and we're just still struggling to get everyone playing well together at the same time.”

After recording a first-round, five-over 77, freshman Stephanie Simich battled back in round two in a big way, recording the second-lowest score of the tournament with a three-under 69, for a total of 146.  Simich played the front nine of the course five-over in the first round, but rebounded the second time around with three birdies, two of which came on holes that she had previously bogeyed that morning.  She is currently tied for eighth place in the individual standings, after being tied for 42nd halfway through the day.

“I went out and was tentative on a lot of shots in the first round,” said Simich.  “I played pretty good golf but I didn't hit the ball that great so it was hard to make pars when I put myself in bad places.  The second time around I tried to stay positive and know that the course was playing difficult and I was able to make some goof putts.”

Senior Lindsay Senger also made an impressive turnaround, as she improved by six strokes and carded an even-par 72 in round two, recording three birdies, two of which on the front nine.  Senger has a two-round total of 151 and is tied for 31st place individually.

“In the first round I was just steering the ball a lot and not letting it go and I missed quite a few greens,” said Senger.  “In the second round I just loosened up a bit and tried not to think as much and I was able to play a lot better.”

Sophomore Dominique Pytlewski opened the tournament with a one over-73, playing all but one hole to par.  Pytlewski, the team leader in the morning, struggled in round two at five-over through the first nine holes, and with help from a pair of birdies in the middle of the round, she managed to card an 80, good for 41stplace and a 153 total.

Sophomore Christine Kim (78-77-155) and junior Cierra Ko (83-78-161) make up the remaining Buffalo scorers and are tied for 55th and 82nd place, respectively.

“It's a course where you can make birdies and shoot low scores, so we know that it's possible,” said Kelly.  “To be honest, we just looked tentative out there.  We're a young team.  I'm very proud of the comeback that they made.  It's a long haul of golf out here and they didn't complain, they sucked it up, and really got the job done.  They looked nervous this morning when they had the opportunity to make birdies and I think that they found a way to bust through that a little and we just have to continue to do that.

“We've played a lot of golf back to back and I think it's good,” said Kelly.  “I'm glad that we're here because that's how you get better, by putting yourself in pressure situations and learning how to overcome your fears and doubts through experience.”

The third and final round of the NCAA Western Regional Preview will tee off at 8:00a.m Tuesday morning.  Live results are available online at www.golfstat.com.
