Golfers Hold On To Eighth At Stanford

April 12, 2008 | Women's Golf

PALO ALTO, Calif. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team wasn't able to make up any ground here Saturday and finished in the same spot it started the day in, as the Buffaloes placed eighth in the Peg Barnard Stanford Intercollegiate.

Host Stanford rallied on the final day and improved two places in the standings to take the team title at the end of 36 holes.  No. 17 California had a two-stroke lead entering the final round, but after a disappointing second day effort the Cardinal took the lead and finished with a two-day total of 591.  Washington (595) and Oregon State (599) both had strong second-day efforts and finished closely behind Stanford.

“I think that they were a little more used to the greens today,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “Overall we started out great and it really looked like it was going to be a really good day because they came in with great attitudes and they were playing hard and doing really well but we had a bad finish.”

Colorado, despite improving by 11 strokes, didn't budge in the standings and took eighth place with a 619 total.

Sophomore Christine Kim, CU's day one individual leader, paced the Buffaloes for the tournament as she recorded a five-over 76 on Saturday for a 149 total, earning her a seventh place finish on the 6,117-yard, par-71 Stanford University golf course.

Senior Lindsay Senger and sophomore Dominique Pytlewski shot identical, three-over par 74's in the final round to record the team's two low scores on the day.  Senger finished in a tie for 30th with a 154 total.  Pytlewski, who had a tough outing in the first round, shaved 16 strokes off her first round score to move from 72nd place to finish in a tie for 59th, with a 164 total.

“The pins were in easier places today, but I think that we all just felt a little more comfortable today,” said Senger.  “I think we realized that we needed to move up on the leaderboard and we came out here today knowing that.  It's been the same thing all semester, not having four scorers consistently and that sometimes keeps us from placing where we should be and where we know we can be.”

Freshman Stephanie Simich (158) and junior Cierra Ko (164) rounded out the CU individuals.

Washington's Karinn Dickinson held on to the individual lead as she shot her final round 71 for an even 142 total, good for a one-shot win over Stanford's Angela King.

“We have a couple of weeks now and I think that we need to not only play a lot but also work on specific areas of our game before Big 12's,” said Kelly.  “It was great getting the experience on these tough courses towards the end of the season and I think that will benefit us.”

The Buffaloes have a two week break to prepare for the Big 12 Tournament which will be held in Stillwater, Okla. on April 25-27.

“I think that all of this is preparing us for Big 12's,” said Senger.  “We know that everything that we have done and been through will eventually pay off.  Getting the experience on really fast greens is going to help us big time at Big 12's and a lot of schools may not have seen greens like this and we have so that will help us out a ton.”
