Buffs Take Season Opener in Three Sets

STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The University of Colorado volleyball team defeated Troy University in three games (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) to open the 2008 season on Friday.

The Buffs are now 15-8 all-time in season openers.

Seniors Alex Buth and Amber Sutherland recorded 13 and 11 kills, respectively in the win. This was Sutherland's first match back after missing the 2007 season. They were the only two players to break the double-digit mark in kills.

Junior Emilee Sisco added eight.

The Buffs got off to a great start in the first set. They recorded 17 kills and hit .343. CU held the Trojans to just nine kills while hitting .143.

Colorado recorded 44 kills in the match and hit .312 with just 14 errors on 96 swings. The Trojans amassed 33 in the effort and were held to an attack percentage of .158. Troy hit a match-low .108 in the third set with 13 kills and nine errors on 37 attempts.

The Buffs also recorded eight service aces in the match, six coming in the second game. Junior Kaitlyn Burkett led the way with three.

Senior Ashley VenHorst led the Buffs with nine digs. Burkett and Buth both picked up eight.

CU will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Mississippi State at 6 p.m. to conclude the MSU Classic.
